The shortages of RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 could last until the start of 2021 according to Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA. He revealed this during a Q/A session after GTC 2020 and said that the GeForce RTX 3000 (RTX 3080 & RTX 3090) shortages would last until 2021 and he states that the shortage is due to demand exceeding the company’s expectations.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang emphasized heavily that the exceeding demand is the most major factor of the shortages and that it has outstripped all of their supply throughout the year and with the holiday season approaching, it is expected to get even worse.
Jensen Huang had the following to say about the RTX 3000 series stock shortage.
I believe that demand will outstrip all of our supply through the year. Remember, we’re also going into the double-whammy. The double-whammy is the holiday season. Even before the holiday season, we were doing incredibly well, and then you add on top of it the ‘Ampere factor,’ and then you add on top of that the ‘Ampere holiday factor,’ and we’re going to have a really really big Q4 season.
The (NVIDIA GeForce RTX) 3080 and 3090 have a demand issue, not a supply issue. The demand issue is that it is much much greater than we expected – and we expected really a lot.
Retailers will tell you they haven’t seen a phenomenon like this in over a decade of computing. It hearkens back to the old days of Windows 95 and Pentium when people were just out of their minds to buy this stuff. So, this is a phenomenon like we’ve not seen in a long time, and we just weren’t prepared for it.
Even if we knew about all the demand, I don’t think it’s possible to have ramped that fast. We’re ramping really really hard. Yields are great, the product’s shipping fantastically, it’s just getting sold out instantly,
I appreciate it very much. I just don’t think there’s a real problem to solve. It’s a phenomenon to observe. It’s just a phenomenon.
Ever since the announcement, RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 have been facing several issues including one of the worst launches for a retail item which saw the cards going out of stock within minutes of being released. Scalpers used bots to buy off multiple cards and then list them for higher prices on eBay.
Due to poor launches of RTX 3090 and 3080, NVIDIA has decided to push back the launch of the RTX 3070 so that they can cater better to the high demand of the graphic cards. Insider reports suggest that the RTX 3070 supply is much higher compared to 3090 and 3080. We will have to wait and see how NVIDIA and other retailers tackle the scalpers for the RTX 3070 launch.
