Sabrent Joins the Chia Mining Trend with Plotripper & Plotripper Pro SSDs

Sabrent has unveiled the Plotripper and Plotripper Pro aimed at Chia cryptocurrency miners. The new Sabrent SSDs have been specifically designed keeping Chia mining in mind. Both the Plotripper and the Plotripper Pro come in 1TB and 2TB offerings, but the Pro features a greater endurance at 54,000 TBW for the 2TB model and 27,000 TBW for the 1TB model while the regular Plotripper has an endurance of 10,000 TBW.

Chia Coin is a quite new cryptocurrency. It works on a proof of storage model which differs from the more traditional cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Chia is advertised as a greener, more environmentally-friendly cryptocurrency because the plotting process on the storage devices does not consume much energy when compared to traditional mining.

However, the plotting process for Chia is very rough for the SSDs, with normal consumer SSDs lasting only a few weeks at max before wearing out completely. Chia mining is best mined on an enterprise-level SSD or a hard drive. But Chia mining requires fast storage and hard drives fall behind in that aspect.

This is where Sabrent’s Plotripper SSDs step in. The Plotripper 2TB has an endurance of 10,000 TBW, while the Plotripper Pro features a greater endurance at 54,000 TBW for the 2TB model and 27,000 TBW for the 1TB model.

If we compare these numbers to Corsair’s Corsair MP600 PRO 2TB, which has an endurance of 1,400 TBW, the Plotripper has 7.1 times more endurance and the Plotripper Pro 1TB has 19.2 times more endurance while the 2TB model has 38.6 times more endurance than it.

Both SSDs will be using the Phison E18 controller which allows users to take advantage of the PCIe Gen 4.0 interface. Sabrent has currently not revealed the pricing and availability of these SSDs so we will have to wait for that information.
