Samsung unveiled its new Odyssey lineup of gaming monitors back at CES 2020. Now they are available in the market and from the early looks, they seem to be a new leap in gaming monitors. The lineup consists of G7 and G9 monitors. The Samsung Odyssey G7 comes in 27’’ and 32’’ versions while the G9 has a massive 49’’ screen.
Each model has a 1440p QLED 1000R curved VA panel with a 240Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, and support for FreeSync 2 and G-Sync variable refresh rate technologies. Samsung has used Quantum Dot technology to achieve all this. The Odyssey G9’s display is at 5120 x 1440 resolution (double QHD), while the G7’s is at 2560 x 1440.
The G7 and G9 both feature Samsung’s 1000R curves. However, the curve is more pronounced on the 45-inch G9 display. On the G7, the side and top bezels are just over 1/4-inch thick while the bottom bezel is 3/4-inch in the middle and about an inch at its highest on each edge. The G9 has about the same bezels.
Both displays are Vesa HDR certified, with the G7 having HDR 600 certification while the G9 has the HDR 1000 certification. These displays will provide more vibrant, bright, and accurate colors. Both the G7 and G9 feature LED cores on the backside with the stand mechanism. The core features several lighting modes including Static, Rainbow, Flash, Double Flash, and Breathing. Depending on which mode settings, you can customize the LED color from the monitor’s on-screen menu.
As far as I/O ports are concerned, the G7 is equipped with 2x DisplayPort, HDMI, 3.5mm Audio, and 2x USB Type-A ports. The G9 has 2x DisplayPort, HDMI, 3.5mm Audio, USB Hub, and 2x USB Type-A ports. The monitor’s full display capabilities can only be achieved through a DisplayPort connection. However, HDMI provides an option for consoles and other external output devices to be used. The I/O section also has a cover that snaps in and hides the cables to provide a cleaner look.
The monitor’s settings include many different modes for different purposes of use. For example, the Game mode handles Refresh Rate, Black Equalizer, Response Time, Adaptive-Sync, Low Input Lag, Virtual Aim Point, Screen Size to provide the best gaming experience. Other modes include Picture mode, Picture in picture, and onscreen display.
All these amazing features and technology doesn’t come cheap. The Samsung Odyssey G7 32-inch curved gaming monitor retails for $799. While the Odyssey G9 has a retail price of $1699. This will seem quite steep to the average consumer. But considering you are getting a curved display with 1ms 240Hz refresh rate and high-end HDR certifications, enthusiasts will not be shied away from this price tag.
