We can easily say that this generation of consoles has been dominated by PS4 and this is quite evident by the fact that the sales of PS4 are still going pretty strong despite the next-gen console PS5 releasing later this year. In a recent financial meeting, Sony revealed its detailed facts and figures relating to different aspects of the company and it was reported that so far, Sony has officially shipped 112.3 million units of PS4 worldwide.
During the three months ending June 30, Sony shipped around 1.9 million PS4 units worldwide. The figures are down as compared to the last year. Last year, Sony shipped 3.2 million units in the same fiscal time frame which shows that this year it is down 1.3 million from the previous year. This is natural since PS5 is right around the horizon and most of the players are now planning to upgrade or simply purchasing PS5 directly when it comes out in Holiday 2020. The rate is also low since most of the people around the world were in quarantine during these months.
However, the games sold on PSN have increased massively in numbers when compared to the previous years’ time frame. Last year, 49.8 million units were sold however this year, a whopping 91 million games were sold for the PS4 system. This is a massive 41.2 million increase when compared to the previous year. Out of these units, 18.5 were PS4 exclusives which is a 6.8 million increase from last year as well. Overall, 74% of the total software sales were video games.
PS Plus also saw a surge in numbers as until the end of June 30, 2020, Sony reported 44.9 million PS Plus subscribers which is a 5.1 million increase from last year’s 36.2 million subscribers. Overall, Sony seems to be doing pretty well in all of its figures. While PS4 unit sales have certainly gone down, the games and PS Plus subscribers are still on the rise. Worldwide, PS4 is still selling decently and Sony is still churning out more consoles from its factory and the numbers seem to only go up, although much slower, until the release of PS5 later this year.
