Fox Detailed Guide – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Our Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fox Guide details everything that you need to know about Fox in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Introduction

Fox deals with his enemies aggressively and most of his attacks are based on quick attacks and then running back to safety. His combos have good recovery time allowing him to land some attacks and combos and then getting away from enemies quickly. With playing as Fox, your strategy should be mostly hit and run.

Fox is weaker against combos and will get high damage if he is stuck in a combo. On the same side, Fox will deal massive amounts of damage if he lands a combo in his enemies. This makes him the perfect hit and run character in the game and his speed also compliments this playstyle with him. Fox can also wall jump.

Attacks

We have detailed Fox’s moves below.

Grounded Attacks

We have detailed all of Fox’s attacks which can be performed while he is on the ground.

Neutral Attacks

Fox’s neutral attack is a combo of three hits. The first hit will deal 1.8 damage the second 1 while the third is a flurry of attacks each dealing 0.6xnumber of attacks with a finishing blow of 2 that knocks enemies away in the air.

The first two hits are punches while the last one is a series of kicks which ends with a massive heel kick which sends enemies flying. This attack is super effective against shields.

Dash Attacks

Fox’s Dash attack deals 6 damage. Fox will lunge at the enemies in speed with his leg outstretched and deliver a powerful kick. This will knock the enemies in the air and set them up in a perfect follow up location. If someone misses to land an attack on you, this is the perfect attack to punish them with because it has good speed, decent damage and sets them for another attack.

Defensive Attacks

Fox’s Ledge attack deals 9 damage while both faceup and facedown wake-up attacks will deal 7 damage each.

Tilts

Fox has three main Tilt attacks detailed below.

Side Tilt

It deals 6 damage. Fox will land a powerful kick to enemies standing in front of him after reaching ahead. This attack has good range and you can aim the hit a little bit up or down using the control stick as well. The kick will also knock the enemies back a little. This does not however allow you to follow up with any sort of attacks.

Up Tilt

It deals 6 and 8 damage. Fox will strike above him with a powerful cartwheel kick. The attack will damage anyone behind and above him. The attack does not come to the front. This is a good attack against enemies who are in the air. You should try to use this attack often to punish enemies who miss attacks or are jumping around too much.

Down Tilt

It deals 8 damage. Fox will crouch and use his tail to sweep the area in front of him. This will send the enemies flying in the air setting them up for follow up combos. This attack deals decent damage to shields as well.

Smash Attacks

Fox can land three powerful smash attacks. We have detailed them below.

Side Smash

It deals 14 damage. For this attack, Fox will jump forward with a powerful axe kick attack on enemies. Enemies hit by the attack will be sent flying back in the air. This is a solid smash attack and deals quite a bit of damage to enemies.

The attack is low start speed which means you can land the attack quickly without giving too much time to enemies to counter it. Watch out for shields because you will be left vulnerable if shielded.

Up Smash

It deals 16 damage. Fox will somersault in the air and outstretch both of his legs in the air to land a powerful kick to enemies. This attack works great as a finisher for combos and enemies who are low on health. The damage dealt is great and few enemies will survive this attack if they are hit by it. The knockback of this attack is also very high and enemies will be sent flying above you. Make sure that you do not miss your mark because Fox will need time to recover from this powerful attack.

Down Smash

It deals 14 damage. Fox will kick his legs around himself like he is doing splits. The kicks pack quite a punch if someone gets hit by them. This is a good attack to follow up after an enemy has landed a weak attack on you.

Grabs

Fox’s basic grab attack will deal 1 damage. Front throw will deal 7 damage while both Back and Up grab will deal 8 damage to enemies. The Down throw will deal 7 damage to enemies. Fox’s grab reach is good and his back and up throws will deal most damage. The down throw will set up the enemies nicely for a follow up combo while the up throw will set them up for a juggle combo.

Aerial Attacks

Fox can land the following attacks while he is in the air.

Neutral Air Attack

It deals 9 attack. For this attack, Fox will land a powerful kick to the enemies in the front. This attack lasts for a few moments and it is good for following up with combos. The knockback is not too great for this attack so don’t expect them to fly away after attacking them. However, there is still time for you to follow up with an attack.

Forward Air Attack

It is a four hit combo where the first hit will deal 1.8 damage, second hit will deal 1.3, third hit will deal 1.8 damage, fourth hit will deal 2.8 damage while the finisher deals 4.8 damage. If it relatively hard to land the finisher here so you will be mostly stuck with a four hit combo.

Fox will land five kicks in quick succession to enemies in the air. The final spin kick launches enemies higher in the air where Fox can follow up with more attacks at them. The initial four kicks have good knockback damage so the final one can really make it easier for you to make them fly if the attack connects together. The recovery time after this attack is high.

Back Air Attack

It deals 13 damage with good knockback. This is a good attack for dealing damage to enemies who end up behind you. Fox will land a powerful kick with his right leg to the back. It has good knockback as well. You can use it as an excellent tool for guarding ledges.

Up Air Attack

It deals 5 damage with first hit and 10 damage with the second hit. This a double kick attack in the air above Fox. This is totally an air attack and will not deal damage to enemies on the ground. This is a short attack and also has a small recovery time so you can use it often against enemies in the air.

Down Air Attack

It deals 1.4×6 and 3 damage to enemies. During the initial phase of this attack, enemies will get meteor smash type damage. Fox will start coming down to the ground while spinning like a drill. At the end of the attack, enemies hit by the last attack will be sent in the air flying. If the complete attack is not finished while you are in the air, the recovery time for this attack is much higher.

Try to time your attack where the final hit lands on an enemy who is on the ground for maximum attack effectiveness. You can be hit from above while you are spinning since enemies who are above you cannot be hit if they come near your head. For this attack, the hitbox is only your legs so you will need to look out for this as well.

Special Moves

Fox has four special moves. We have detailed them below.

Neutral Special – Blaster

It deals varying damage to enemies. Damage ranges from Up Close: 3 damage, Midrange: 2 damage and Tail end: 1.4 damage. Fox will use his Blaster to fire at his enemies. Depending on the location where it hits the enemies, damage will vary. The bullets do not deal too much damage to enemies but they travel very far with good speed.

Side Special – Fox Illusion

It deals 8 damage to enemies. Fox will run towards the enemies in supersonic mode. This attack deals moderate damage but it is totally useless if your enemies use shield or jump up from the attack. This will leave you in a very tight spot where you will not be able to do much to escape the incoming combos and hits. This serves best as a recovery tool in air.

Up Special – Fire Fox

It deals 1.8x 7 and 16 damage. Fox will engulf himself in flames and start heading upwards dealing fire damage to enemies and ending the attack with a final powerful blow. At the end of the attack, the recovery time is massive as Fox will fall to the ground. You can control the up direction slightly using the control stick.

Down Special – Reflector

Up activation, 2 damage is dealt to enemies while each projectile reflected back at your enemies will deal 40% extra damage. Fox will activate a barrier that will reflect nearly all projectiles back at the enemies. If you use this attack in the air, your fall speed will be decreased. This allows you to trick your enemies. If enemies are closer to you, they get damaged by the simply activating the barrier.

Final Smash –  Team Star Fox

Fox will set the reticule on enemies and then call down a group of Arwings to fire on them in a formation attack dealing damage to them.
