Meta Knight Detailed Guide – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Our Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Meta Knight Guide details everything that you need to know about Meta Knight in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Introduction
Meta Knight comes equipped with his small sword and armor just like in Kirby. He is an exceptional aerial fighter and his aerial combat ability is even made better by the fact that he can jump five times in the air after his initial jump from the ground. This not only lifts him up but you can also change Meta Knight’s direction with each jump.
Meta Knight can easily transition from ground combat to aerial combat and vice versa. He is also very good at guarding ledges and preventing enemies from moving in. Most of his attacks have low recovery times making him ideal for any sort of combat. However, he is an advanced player and some of his combos require practice before you can actually use them effectively in the fight.
Attacks
We have detailed Meta Knight’s moves below.
Grounded Attacks
This section of the guide details all of Meta Knight’s ground attacks.
Neutral Attack Combo
Meta Knight’s neutral attack combo can be dragged to as many hits as you like. Each initial hit will deal 0.8 damage to enemies while the final hit will deal 2 damage and launch the enemies away from Meta Knight. The initial flurry of sword slashes will continue until you hold the button. Release the button and Meta Knight will land a powerful final hit and send enemies flying away from him.
Dash Attack
Meta Knight’s dash attack deals 7 damage to enemies. While running, Meta Knight will deliver a side kick to his enemies which sends enemies flying in the air above him. Enemies who connect with the leg will fly directly above Meta Knight. You can follow them up for another combo.
Defensive Attacks
Meta Knight’s ledge attack deals 9 damage while his faceup and facedown wakeup attacks deal 7 damage to enemies.
Tilt Attacks
Meta Knight has three Tilt attacks and we have detailed them below.
Side Tilt
This attack has three hits. First 2 deal 2 damage each while the last one deals 4 damage and knocks enemies in the air, flying away from Meta Knight. The first two hits are very quick sword slashes while the third one focuses more on damage rather speed. It is also upward attack which sends enemies flying away from Meta Knight.
Up Tilt
This attack deals 7 damage to enemies. Enemies hit by this attack are sent flying above Meta Knight. Meta Knight will twirl like a drill and jump slightly in the air with his sword drawn upwards. Enemies hit by the sword are dragged to the air above with him.
Down Tilt
This attack deals 5 damage to enemies. This attack is good for jabbing at enemy’s legs. Meta Knight will crouch and land a powerful swipe with his sword at enemy’s legs. This attack is pretty fast and it can knock down enemies easily.
Smash Attacks
We have detailed Meta Knight’s smash attacks below.
Side Smash
This attack deals 16 damage. Before landing this powerful front slash, Meta Knight will take his time to gather his strength for this attack. Enemies hit by the slash are sent upwards flying away from Meta Knight. This attacks takes some time to land so you will need to keep this in mind before using this attack.
Up Smash
This attack deals 4, 3 and 5 damage. It is a three hit combo attack and enemies are launched above Meta Knight in the air. Meta Knight will swing his sword in a powerful slash above him three times. If enemies are hit with the first two hits, they will be stuck in place. After this, the third hit will ensure that enemies are sent flying in the air. This attack is effective against enemies standing above you on a platform.
Down Smash
This attack covers both front and back of Meta Knight with a single attack. At the front, it deals 10 damage while at the back, it deals 13 damage. Enemies hit by this attack are sent flying in either direction. This powerful sword slash is low but the sword is aimed at a higher angle. The attack starts at the front and then goes all the way to Meta Knight’s back.
This attack covers both sides. Damage dealt to enemies at the back is more than damage dealt to enemies at the front. This attack is one of the fastest attack in the whole game so you can land it pretty quickly. Despite the fast landing speed, the recovery time for this attack is slightly higher otherwise this would have the perfect quick attack.
Grab Attacks
Meta Knight’s normal grab attack deals 1 damage to enemies. Forward throw deals 9 damage and launches enemies in the air away from Meta Knight. Back Throws will deal 10 damage to enemies while up throw will deal 10 damage and launch enemies right above Meta Knight. Back throw deals 7.5 damage but despite dealing the least damage, it will set up enemies nicely for a follow up combo.
Meta Knight’s grab is useless at range. It features extremely low range because his arms are tiny. Once grabbed however, each throw deals a decent amount of damage to enemies and launches them away in the air. All his throws are unique in animation despite dealing almost similar damage.
Front throw is a powerful roundhouse kick throw and back throw is a powerful sword hit throw. For his up throw, Meta Knight will gab the enemy and fly in the air and then away from the stage before slamming them to the ground. For his down throw, Meta Knight will ride his enemies and stomp on their backs like a trampoline.
Aerial Attacks
Meta Knight can perform the following attacks in the air.
Neutral Air Attack
This attack deals 10 damage to enemies. If you hit enemies early in this attack, they will receive additional damage. Meta Knight will spin in the air with his sword extended. Enemies hit by the sword are launched away from Meta Knight. Also, this attack does not trap enemies for continuous hits, enemies hit once by the sword are sent flying away.
The maximum damage is dealt to enemies if they are hit quickly with the attack when Meta Knight starts spinning. As the spin continues the damage decreases over time. The best way to land this attack is right after a jump. You can also use this attack to prevent enemies recover from the air. Send them flying back off the stage with this attack.
Forward Air Attack
This is a three hit combo attack. The first and the second hit deals 1.5 damage each while the third and final hit will deal 3 damage to enemies. This is similar to the ground attack where the first two hits will lock the enemy in place ensuring that he does not escape the third and final hit which send them flying away from Meta Knight.
This attack is a little slower than other aerial attacks but it ensures that enemies caught in the trap receive the full combo before they can act again. After landing the attack, recovery time is also a little higher for this attack but considering the fact that you send enemies flying away with the third hit, you should be fine if there is only one enemy on the stage.
Back Air Attack
This is also a three hit combo attack where the first two attacks deal 1.5 damage while the fourth deals 4 damage. Meta Knight will turn around and land three powerful sword slashes behind him. These hits are very strong and it can potentially KO enemies or send them flying off the stage.
Up Air Attack
This attack will deal 4 damage to enemies. Meta Knight will land a powerful sing attack right with his sword right above him. This will set up enemies nicely for a follow up juggle combo. Since this is a very short attack, you will require good timing and accuracy to hit enemies with this attack.
Enemies hit by the sword are sent flying further up above Meta Knight and you can follow them back up for more combos and attacks. However, they will be able to recover if they use air recovery or double jump. In such situations, you also have five jumps at your disposal in the air, make sure that you do not let them escape.
Down Air Attack
This attack will deal 6 damage to enemies. For this attack, Meta Knight will attack below him with a powerful sword slash. This is an arcing attack and has very less recovery time allowing you to land multiple attacks in a single jump. The only thing you should worry about is landing time which is slightly higher.
Special Attacks
Meta Knight has four special attacks and we have detailed them below.
Neutral Special – Mach Tornado
This attack deals 12 damage to enemies. If you repeatedly press the special attack button, Meta Knight will keep going higher and higher in the air however maximum damage is dealt at the start of the attack. Meta Knight will transform into a tornado for this attack and will deal damage to all enemies who come in contact with it.
Normally Meta Knight stays at one place but if repeatedly press the special attack button, Meta Knight will rise up in the air. You can use this as a powerful recovery move as well. However, do not stop in midair because you will fall down to your death or the stage without any input.
Side Special – Drill Rush
This attack deals 1.1×11 and 3 damage to enemies. The first part of the attack lands 11 hits while the finisher deals more damage. You can use the control stick to adjust the trajectory slightly up or down. This is a powerful drill attack that can also be used as a recovery attack. Meta Knight will transform himself into a drill and move to attack enemies at his front.
The attack will hit enemies 11 times and then finish the attack with a powerful finisher move and bouncing Meta Knight back from them. In the drill form, use the control stick to move it up or down and aim at the enemy. Watch out for initial landing time as it takes some time to land this attack. Timing is important with this attack. Also try to avoid finishing the drill in midair as you will be sent falling to the ground.
Up Special – Shuttle Loop
This attack deals 9 and 6 damage as this is a two hit combo attack. Just like the previous attack, using control stick will allow you to change the trajectory slightly. This is basically a loop attack where Meta Knight will launch above in the air, hit the enemy with a first hit and then perform a loop and then go in for the second hit.
Apart from hitting enemies twice, you can also use it as a recovery tool if you fall down from a stage. However, if you miss to land the attack or fail to reach the stage from a recovery, you will be left helpless and will fall down without any input. Make sure that you do not abuse this move if you are fighting on a tricky stage.
Down Special – Dimensional Cape
This attack deals a solid 16 damage to enemies. If you hold the button after disappearing, when Meta Knight reappears he will land the attack. Meta Knight will disappear behind his cape, teleport a short distance and follow it up with a powerful AoE sword attack. If you do not hold the button, Meta Knight will not attack with this move.
This can be used as a recovery tool as well because it allows Meta Knight to cover some distance quickly. If you want to ensure a landing hit, make sure that you do not release the special attack button while teleporting. You can also slightly adjust his direction while teleporting using the control stick.
Final Smash – Darkness Illusion
For his Final Smash, Meta Knight will throw his blade up and then shoot an electric projectile in the air. If this hits an enemy, Meta Knight will launch them above with him and split into different versions and continue attacking them before finally launching them away. If the electric projectile misses to hit any enemy, nothing happens.
