Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Yoshi Guide
Below we have listed all the attacks that are specific and special to Yoshi. Refer to each attack for a better understanding of how Yoshi combats in the stage.
Introduction
Yoshi is one of the heaviest fighters in the game, that allows him to have maximum air velocity that allows him to cover larger distances. He can also crouch that allows him to evade certain mid-air attacks and projectiles as he travels along the stage.
Yoshi is a versatile fighter in the game, whose his various attacks launch at specific angles allow you for potential follow ups and combos. His up air and tilt have low lag, making combos with juggle traps easy to execute, while his ground grab has extended reach so you can punish opponents without having to dash towards them
Grounded Attacks
This section of the guide contains all the grounded attacks that Yoshi can perform while on the stage.
Neutral Attacks
Yoshi has two neutral attacks. The first one deals 3 damage while the second one deals 4 damage. This is a two hit kick combo, that starts with a quick front kick that is immediately followed by an inward spin kick that knocks the enemy away.
Dash Attack
This attack deals 11 damage, where Yoshi runs and transfers all the momentum into a flying kick. This kick launches opponent slightly up. The dash attack deals the most damage if it earliest in the attack. If however you do hit the opponent at the very late stage in the attack, you can follow quickly follow up with combos.
Smashes
Yoshi has three smash attacks.
Side Smash
This attack deals 15.5 damage that where he rams his head in the forward direction with a lot of force. This attack launches opponents far away. You also have to option to angle Yoshi’s head upward or down low to the ground wherever you want to hit your opponent.
Up Smash
This attack deals 14 damage, where Yoshi performs a somersault kick that is produced out in front of him and over his head, going all the way to his back.
This attack covers all of the area in front of Yoshi, and some of the area behind him just over his head. This move has a lot of lag, which can be risky for a retaliatory attack especially if dodged of shielded.
Down Smash
This attack deals 12 damage, where Yoshi produces two sweep attacks with his tail that begin with the front and then to his back. This attack is best for clearing out space around you when you are being surrounded by both ends. This move leaves you vulnerable and has no reach as well, so its best used in desperate conditions.
Defensive Attacks
Yoshi has two defensive attacks. The first one is the Ledge attack that deals 9 damage, and the second is the Wake- up attack that deals 7 damage.
Tilts
Yoshi has three Tilt Attacks.
Side Tilt
This attack deals 5 damage, where Yoshi swings his tail in front of him in an upward sweeping motion that knocks enemies into the air. This attack can be angled up or down, and against most fighters, this attack can be followed by a neutral air attack.
Since this attack launches opponent straight up in the air, if hit at point blank range, this can set you up for combo up tilt.
Up Tilt
This attack deals 8 damage, where Yoshi raises his tail I the air and swings it behind him, which in turn launches the enemies directly above. This attack can also be followed by the Up tilt but only at low percentages.
This attack is an effective ground to air based attack for incoming airborne enemies. It has wide coverage and low lag, that allows you to combo at most damage percentages.
Down Tilt
This attack deals 7 damage, where Yoshi crawls down and sweeps opponent off their feet with a tail strike. This attack is the best to avoid aggression and turning the tables on the opponents, especially with their own dash attacks. However, you do not get much of an follow up on hit at low percentages, but at higher damage, tilt causes a knockdown.
Grabs
Yoshi has five Grab Attacks. The first grab attack deals 1.3 damage. The next are the Front and Back throw that deal 9 damage each. Finally the Up Throw deals 5 damage, while the Down Throw deals 4 damage.
Yoshi’s Grab Attack is when he grabs opponents with his tongue. If he grabs an opponent successfully, he swallows them. His front and back throws are not so great, and do not throw them afar, and gives opponents enough time to get back up
Yoshi’s Up throw flings opponents directly above him, while the down throw deals the most damage while putting your opponent into a juggle state.
Aerial Attacks
This section of the guide will cover all the Aerial attacks that Yoshi has.
Neutral Air Attack
This attack deals 10 damage, where Yoshi extends a lightning fast kick when airborne. This kick goes straight front and towards the opponent, but does not offer much knockback, but its active window stays up for a long time.
Neutral air attack into fast fall makes for a good “walling” technique, so you can hop in place and extend your kick attack, then fall quickly to deter advancing foes. It’s susceptible to dash-in shield grabs, but that’s only if your opponent is sharp enough to perform the sequence on reaction.
Forward Air Attack
This attack deals 15 damage, where Yoshi headbutts while soaring through the air. This attack deals high damage, but low amount of kick which causes only a little knockback effect against heavier opponents.
This attack can also be used as an edge guarding attack for spiking enemies offstage.
Back Air Attack
This attack deals 3.5×2, 5.5 damage, where Yoshi whips his tail rapidly behind him for a three hit combo. The first two hits drag the enemies around in the air, when the last blow launches the enemy up and away.
Against enemies at low-damage percentages (around 30%), you can hit with a grounded short hop back air attack, then dash in for a guaranteed up tilt, followed by a jump up air attack. This deals around 35% damage.
Back air attack isn’t as strong an edge-guarding attack as forward air due to its high air lag. If you jump off a ledge and miss the enemy, you have to wait a while before you’re actionable.
Up Air Attack
This attack deals 12 damage. While airborne Yoshi whips his tail straight up into the air, hitting enemies above him. This attack starts up quickly and has a low amount of ending lag, making it extremely effective for juggle traps, extending air combos, and prodding at enemies that are standing on platforms
Down Air Attack
This attack deals 2.3×6, 1.9×6, 2.8 damage. In this attack, Yoshi flails his legs beneath him, essentially running midair and striking opponents with a 12 hit combo. This attack has a lot of ending lag, but deals the lot of damage if you can guarantee that all of his kicks are connected.
Special Moves
Yoshi has 4 special moves. All of them are detailed below.
Neutral Special – Egg Lay
This attack deals 7 damage, where Yoshi extends and flings his tongue out in front of him and swallows the opponent nearby. Then lays out an egg that will trap the enemy within it. The more the enemy is weaker, the longer it will take them to come out.
This attack is best for opponents that are super good in defense, where they tend to shield all your attacks in range.
Side Special – Egg Roll
This attack deals 10 to 13 damage runs ahead like Sonic the Hedgehog, and encases himself in an egg that tumbles across the stage, plowing enemies and knocking them airborne. You can also jump once during this special move.
This attack can also be used to evade and run out the edge in the corner when you are about to be knocked out.
Up Special – Egg Throw
This attack deals 6 damage produces an egg and lobs it forward into varying angles of your choice. You can throw the egg straight up into the air by inputting the direction Yoshi’s facing away from just before throwing. Use this to fake out your opponents, and if they dash in to attack you, you can potentially hit them with the falling egg as it drops at your position.
While Yoshi doesn’t have a conventional up special recovery move, you can use Egg Throw while airborne to flutter upward a bit, keeping you in the air longer to give you that extra boost to make it over ledges and platforms.
Down Special – Yoshi Bomb
This attack deals 4, 15 grounded damage, while 12 airborne damage. In this attack, Yoshi jumps high into the sky, to perform a dive bomb attack straight into the ground dealing heavy damage and launching enemies way up in the sky. Be careful though, if you use this attack off stage, there is no return as Yoshi will fall straight down.
Final Smash – Stampede
In this attack, Yoshi first knocks down the opponents with a tackle, which is then followed by a stampede of various Yoshi in different colors that crash into opponent and send them flying away.
