You should know that not all chapters have Training Manuals and Tools in them. Unlike Training Manuals, Tools are even less in number. We have detailed their locations below.
Bill’s Town
You will not find any Training Manuals or Tools until you reach Bill’s Town in the main story. This section of the guide lists all Training Manuals and Tools that you can find in this chapter.
Manual #1 – Shiv Sharpening
After you enter Bill’s Hideout, you will notice that it is essentially a diner. Look at the counter of the diner and you will find a Shiv Reinforcement near the case register. This manual will increase the durability of your Shivs.
Tools #1
Once you get to the weapons in Bill’s Hideout, look for the Tools sitting in the corner on a shelf. It is a large red box that looks like any traditional toolbox. It is above some arrows and parts.
Pittsburg
This section of the guide lists all collectibles found in Pittsburg.
Tools #2
Right at the start of the chapter, after you get ambushed, kill all bandits and you will eventually arrive in their garage. Look at the large box shelves in one corner to find the large, red box of Tools. Pick it up.
Manual #2 – Health Splinting
In the garage, you will also find a mattress on the floor next to some boxes and garbage. The Training Manual is sitting here on the last shelf of a steel cupboard. This manual will make your health kits more effective and each kit will give you more health.
Manual # 3 – Shiv Reinforcement
Climb the ladder to arrive on the first floor of the lobby and then make your way to the right while avoiding the large hole. You will come across an open briefcase with a paper on it. Pick it up and examine it. This is actually a code to a safe. Note it down and then make your way down to the flooded area where a blue safe is sitting behind a counter. Open it up and collect the manual sitting inside it.
Manual #4 – Melee Knots
Keep progressing in the main story until you will come to a spot where Ellie will save you. Once you have dealt with the threat, use the ladder and go up. Upstairs, turn left and keep heading straight until you reach the end of a broken staircase. Go down and keep moving ahead, past the elevators until you reach an area with some overturned chairs and small desks. Look to the right and you will find the manual sitting on a desk. It will make your melee weapons more durable.
Manual #5 – Molotov Construction
Eventually, you will meet some more friendly faces in the shape of two brothers. Explore their hideout and you will find this manual in the kitchen. It will increase the AoE damage of your Molotovs.
Suburbs
This section of the guide lists all collectibles in the Suburbs.
Manual #6 – Bomb Containment
Keep progressing in the chapter until you trigger the sound trap. Move ahead and you will see a broken bookshelf on the right side with a yellow box handing above it. The manual is sitting on the last compartment of this shelf. This will increase the range of your bombs.
Tools 3
Keep progressing and you will eventually come out. When you reach the ice cream truck, go to its left to find a blue truck with the Tools sitting in its back. Pick them up.
Manual #7 – Melee Technique
The blue truck where you found Tools 3 is parked next to a red house. Go inside this house and make your way up the stairs. Check the ceiling of the first floor and you will find a trap door that can be accessed by Ellie. Help Ellie get to the top and she will bring this manual for you. This manual will further increase the durability of your Shivs.
Tommy’s Dam
There is only 1 Training Manual in this chapter.
Manual #8 – Smoke Chemistry
While exploring the dam, Tommy will eventually explain to Joel about two engineers analyzing the plant’s schematics. At this point, check the desk to the left of the lamp and you will find this manual sitting there. This will make your Smoke Bombs more effective.
The University
This section of the guide lists all Training Manuals and Tools that you can find in The University.
Manual #9 – Health Sterilization
After reaching the large square with the fountain in the middle of the university campus. Turn left and get off the horse. You will come to a building which has a broken window and you can get in to explore the building. Use the stairs inside and you will be able to use the ledge outside the window to reach the next room which is blocked from inside. The manual is sitting here on a table. Your health gained from health kits will increase even further.
Manual #10 – Molotov Deployment
You will need a Shiv for this one. After getting access to the Science building, you will eventually reach a door that has yellow and red cables underneath it. Turn left without opening the door and reach the end where you will find a door that requires a Shiv to open it. Open the door and get inside to find a Training Manual which makes your Molotovs even more effective in combat.
Tools 4
Inside the same room where you found the previous Training Manual.
Lakeside Resort
There is only one Training Manual in this chapter.
Manual #11 – Smoke Shaping
You will need a Shiv for this one. React the point where you have a guard standing on top of a container with a fire barrel next to him. From this location, you have to get to the other side the street and then eventually back of the building where this locked door is present. Use the Shiv to open it and the manual is sitting inside in plain sight. It will make your Smoke Grenades even more effective in combat.
Bus Depot
This is the last chapter which contains Training Manuals and Tools.
Tools 5
The most advanced Tools are sitting inside the biggest tent on the platform of the Bus Depot.
Manual #12 – Bomb Shrapnel
After you arrive in the Tunnel, you will come across two Bloaters. Deal with the Bloaters and then look to the left side to find a wrecked delivery truck next to a police car. The last Training Manual is sitting on top of this truck You can climb it easily from the front, red section of the truck.
