Torchlight: Infinite Skills System Detailed in New Update

Publisher XD Network has given an in-depth look at the skills system featured in the upcoming title Torchlight: Infinite. The skill system plays a critical role in Torchlight: Infinite and the system has been completely redesigned to give players more control over their skills and how they want to proceed with their character builds. Since Torchlight: Infinite is aiming for infinite possibilities when it comes to hero creation, having a skill system that gives this freedom was vital.

Unlike the skill system of the previous Torchlight II where players had a set of pre-defined skills to choose from, Torchlight: Infinite has a skill system where players can create their own skills through various choices. In Torchlight: Infinite, skills are divided into Active Skills and Support Skills. Each of the Active Skills can be linked with multiple Support Skills to give Active Skills vast possibilities and varying paths of development. Once a Support Skill is linked to an Active Skill, the Active Skill be affected by the Support Skill, and it will undergo various changes in form, effect, and strength.

The developer gives the example of Chromatic Shot which when fired releases 3 energy arrows that track enemies and deal Physical, Fire, Lightning, Cold, and Chaos damage on hit. If you link support skills Greater Multiple Projectiles and Wind Projectiles to Chromatic Shot, it will increase the number of arrows it releases to 7 and they will also possess enhanced tracking abilities and will travel faster as well. This will open further enhancement opportunities such as adding ailments to the shot. This will result in you having a unique and different shot based on your own personal choices.

The developer further details that every skill in the game is like a separate module and you can combine these modules to create a skill that goes according to your own liking. There are no microtransactions in the game to unlock these skills and they have unlocked automatically with hero leveling up. You can then equip the skills you want from the Skill Mentor. These skills grow more powerful with each level gain, and you level up by killing monsters in the game. The skills are not bound to one particular hero as well giving you plenty of opportunities to use the same skills with multiple heroes.
