Ubisoft has shared an update on the expansion of Tom Clancy’s The Division universe. The franchise started back in 2016 with the launch of The Division when it was launched as a brand-new IP under the Tom Clancy umbrella since 2009. During its initial launch, The Division broke various Ubisoft sale records and the franchise was termed a success. Moving on to 2019, Ubisoft released The Division 2 which was the second title in the franchise.
Its expansion Warlords of New York was released later in 2020 and currently, The Division 2 is running pretty well with a decent player base and Ubisoft releasing regular updates and events for the title as well. At its launch, Warlords of New York was also the most active in the game’s history. Alain Corre, executive director of Ubisoft EMEA explained:
In the past five years, The Division has grown from a very ambitious project at Ubisoft to a world-renowned franchise reaching 40 million unique players. We are very proud of what our teams have accomplished with this franchise and the amazing universe they have created. The potential and depth of this enable us to explore new and exciting content that will please loyal long-term fans of The Division and new ones alike.
Detailing the expansion of the franchise, Ubisoft has announced Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland, a brand-new free-to-play game set in the universe of The Division and The Division 2. It is under development at Red Storm Entertainment who has also previously worked at both titles in the franchise. It will be a standalone title available on PC, consoles, and cloud platforms in 2021-22. Ubisoft has also expressed its interest in developing a The Division mobile game however additional details on the project will be shared later.
Ubisoft also revealed that The Division 2 is getting brand-new content in late 2021 as Ubisoft Massive is working with Ubisoft Bucharest on further expanding The Division 2 with even more content. The new content will include an entirely new game mode and new methods for leveling agents up with an emphasis on increasing build variety and viability. Additional details will be released at a later date.
Ubisoft also detailed that The Division is expanding its transmedia offering with the film starring Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal. The movie is being developed with Netflix and it is inspired by the events of the original game. The film will be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber. The Division is also getting an original novel published by Aconyte. Its story will be set after the events of The Division 2 and will explore how the Outbreak affects different regions of the United States as agents fight to secure supply routes.
Ubisoft will reveal additional information on The Division’s transmedia content later this year.
