Valve Index VR Headset was teased a while back but it has now been revealed. You can pre-order it now and it will be shipped between 28th June and 1st July. The Valve Index VR Headset kit will cost you $999. Valve is marketing the headset as “high-fidelity virtual reality”. It is supposed to compete with the headsets that are already available on the market including the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Sony also has the PSVR headset.

Valve Index VR Headset

If you are interested in getting a high-end VR headset then this is an option that you should look into but be sure that your PC is able to keep up. The following are the requirements of the Index VR headset:

  • OS: Windows 10, SteamOS, Linux
  • RAM: 8 GB+
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970+ or AMD RX480+ Available DisplayPort required, HDMI not supported
  • CPU: Dual Core with hyperthreading, or better
  • USB: 3.0+ for headset cameras

Main Features

The headset comes with dual 1440×1600 RGB LCDs which provide 50% more subpixels compared to OLED displays. Screen door effect is also reduced. Other than that, the display runs at 120 Hz and can run at 90 Hz as well. There is an experimental 140 Hz mode as well which you can check out at launch.

The FOV is 20% larger than the HTC Vive and should be more immersive but this is something that we will have to see for ourselves. The headphones are integrated and provide 180-degree audio.
