Duck Hunt Detailed Guide – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Our Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Duck Hunt Guide details everything that you need to know about Duck Hunt in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Introduction

Duck Hunt is combination of the Dog and the Duck from Duck Hunt. The Dog provides good movement around the stage and can wall jump as well. On the other hand, Duck can fly and save Dog from different situations which would be deadly for it otherwise. Duck also uses its beak for some cool attacks.

Their attacks also combine the Zapper light gun from the NES game and other moves also remind us of the classic game. Their weakness is that most of the attacks require careful timing if you want to use them to their maximum effectiveness. Most of the attacks will go wasted if you do not plan ahead and blindly use them. The Dog can also crouch walk.

Attacks

We have detailed Duck Hunt’ moves below.

Grounded Attacks

We have detailed all attacks which can be performed while the duo is on the ground.

Neutral Attacks

Duck Hunt features a three hit neutral combo with two alternate final moves. Both the first attacks will deal 1.5 damage while the third could deal 5 or 0.4×8 and 3 damage depending whether you go for the auto combo or the manual combo. If you hold the attack button, you will perform the first variation of the attack in which the Dog will start with a headbutt, follow up with a headbutt and then end with a two legged kick.

If you want to opt for the other variation, you will need to manually input the command rather than holding the button. During this attack, the final move is landed by the Duck. The Duck will unleash a beak combo at the enemies ahead. After that, the Dog will launch the enemies in the air with an attack. If you are opting for the Duck attack, hold the button at the end and the Duck will keep hitting enemies with its beak for additional damage.

Dash Attack

Their Dash Attack deals 10 damage. The Dog starts running towards the enemy and then at the end the duck pushes forward with its beak protruding at the front for a powerful attack which can knock enemies away and in the air. If the beak quickly connects with an enemy, they will be launched up. Delayed beak hits will launch them over Duck Hunt offering a great opportunity for a juggle combo.

Defensive Attacks

Duck Hunt’s ledge attack deals 9 damage while the wake-up attack deals 7 damage.

Tilts

Duck Hunt has three Tilt attacks and we have detailed them below.

Side Tilt

It deals 8 damage. The Dog will let the Duck take in charge who deals a charged beak attack at the front. You can press up or down to aim the beak attack. This is great to dislodge enemies grabbing ledges after recovering from off stage. This attack is a little slower than most attacks but it has the greatest range.

Up Tilt

It deals 7 damage. The bird will swing upwards dealing damage to enemies above the duo. The attack box of this attack is very small so it is very easy to miss unless you are very precise with the attack. If hit, enemies will be ready for a follow up juggle attack.

Down Tilt

It deals 8 damage. The Dog will crouch giving the Duck space it needs to poke the ground with its beak. This is a low attack and enemies will be pushed back by this attack. This is a safe attack because if shielded, both of them are low enough missing most counter attacks.

Smashes

Duck Hunt comes with three Smash Attacks. We have detailed them below.

Side Smash

It deals 4×2, 9-5.6×2 and 12.6 damage to enemies. During this attack, several Zapper shot reticules will appear on the stage and hit enemies with moderate damage. Each hit will keep juggling enemies on the screen. The final hit is the strongest one in the whole combo. You can lead targets for these hits making sure that they stay in the reticule so that you can make them juggle.

It features decent speed and the damage is also moderate. Sometimes the gun shots will not land on the exact spot as well making it more of a luck based attack. If shielded, the duo are left vulnerable for counter attacks and they can deal some serious damage quickly even after the final hit of the combo.

Up Smash

It deals 2.5×2, 10-3.5×2 and 14 damage to enemies. For this attack, same zapper shots are fired at the enemies but this time they are aimed above the pair. The complete area above Duck Hunt is covered on both sides. The initial hits are faster and the second is little slower however it is more powerful than the initial shots. Final shot is most powerful and is aimed right above the pair’s location.

Down Smash

5×2 and 6 damage to enemies. Duck Hunt will crouch low on the ground and the Zapper will start firing on both the front and the back. The initial shots will be fast but less deadly the final shot. An enemy hit by the complete combo will be first launched at the back, then back at the front.

Grabs

Duck Hunt’s grab attack deals 1.2 damage initially. The front throw will deal 8 damage, back throw will deal 9 damage, up throw will deal 6 damage while the ground throw will deal 5 damage. The grab attacks are pretty fast and with dog reaching in for the grab, the range is also decent. The back throw is the most powerful move here.

Aerial Attacks

Duck Hunt has the following attacks while they are in the air.

Neutral Air Attack

It deals 11 damage. The Dog will spin in the air with all limbs stretched out dealing damage to enemies caught in the spin. Any enemy that touches the Dog at this point is damaged. This attack has good speed and time of activation as well. You can easily hit enemies in the air with this attack. It is not much effective against enemies on the ground.

Forward Air Attack

It deals 10 damage. For this attack, the Dog will shoulder charge the enemy and then the Duck will land a powerful beak hit to the enemy. The recovery time from this attack is small while the initiating time is also quick making it an effective attack in their arsenal.

Back Air Attack

It deals 12.5 attack. The Duck will land a powerful beak attack at the back of the duo. It delivers decent damage to enemies and knocks them back. The recovery time from this attack is a little higher.

Up Air Attack

It deals 3×2 and 6 damage. The Duck will launch above the pair with a powerful lunge and attack three times in quick succession. The final hit deals most damage in this attack. The final hit will launch the enemies in the air but first two do not which makes to land the complete attack a nightmare. The recovery time from this attack is not too high making it a good attack nonetheless.

Down Air Attack

It deals 5 and 10 damage. For this attack, Both the Duck and the Dog will smash each other down at the ground with powerful headbutts. The speed of this attack is average and the recovery time is much higher as well. This attack is not very effective so we recommend that you stick to other more useful attacks in their attack list.

Special Attacks

Duck Hunt has four special attacks and we have detailed them below.

Neutral Special – Trick Shot

It deals 10-14 damage overall with each shot dealing around 1.7 damage. Duck Hunt will throw a Hogan’s Alley Can in the stage. This is an explosive can and will explode on contact with the enemies. If thrown with much force on the ground, the damage is increased. If it does not hit anything before falling on the ground, it will stay for 11 seconds before vanishing.

This time can be decreased by hitting the can and make it explode. Your enemies can also smash the can to make it explode. If you try to land another attack while the can is on the stage, this will cause NES Zapper to shoot at the can and around eight shots, it will be exploded. You can use this to bait enemies and damaging them.

Side Special – Clay Shooting

It deals 2 damage with the pigeon. Duck Hunt will throw a clay pigeon in the front which is shaped like a Frisbee. Depending on the initial throw, this can travel too far or near the due as well. This will continue to travel and hitting enemies dealing damage to them. Inputting the Side Special again will cause NES Zapper to shoot bullets at the disc.

The disc does not deal too much damage to the enemies but this can be increased by shattering it with the NES Zapper shots. One single Zapper shot will shatter it and it will damage enemies around it. You can use this attack to harass other players in the game.

Up Special – Duck Jump

This attack does not deal any damage and is intended as a movement only attack. The Duck will lift the dog in the air and carry his weight for as long as it can. You can then use the stick to move the duck around and carry the dog with it. If you turn the directions while flapping, the distance will be reducing which can be covered by them during this jump.

Down Special – Wild Gunman

This attack varies a lot in the game. A Wild Gunman will appear on the screen where he will be able to attack the enemies with their respective weapons. Each of the gunmen that appear have different attacks and their damage will also differ. This is launched in the air so the Gunmen will first drift down to the ground before firing at the enemies. Depending on which Gunman comes, their damage will vary. We have detailed all variations below.

  • Red Bandana, black vest – 8 damage
  • White shirt, no vest/duster – 8 damage
  • Black duster – 9 damage
  • Red Duster – 10 damage
  • Sombrerro – 11 damage with fire rounds

Final Smash – NES Zapper Posse

For this Final Smash, the duo will call the entire posse from the Duck Hunt game. Make sure that the enemies are closer to you before you fire this attack. Once the attack is launched, a flock of ducks will appear on the stage. If any of these ducks hit an enemy, the whole posse of wild gunmen will appear at the stage and start shooting them up.
