Greninja Detailed Guide – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Our Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Greninja Guide details everything that you need to know about Greninja in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Introduction

As the name suggests, Greninja works like a ninja. He is speedy, aggressive and agile at the same time. His jumps are pretty high than normal fighters and he can use the environment to move around like a proper ninja. His posture is also slinking which makes him even harder to hit. He is good both in the air as well as on the ground.

Greninja will use every bit of the environment for his advantage. He can crouch walk, he can wall jump and he can cling to walls as well which makes him a true ninja like fighter. With all this movement and speed, he lacks in damage. His attacks may seem to be damaging but they are actually not too much damaging. Advanced players are recommended to play with Greninja due to his speed.

Attacks

We have detailed Ganondorf’s moves below.

Grounded Attacks

We have detailed all of Greninja’s ground attack below.

Neutral Attack

Greninja’s neutral attack combo consists of four hits. The first two hits will deal 2 damage each, the third is a flurry attack where each hit will deal 0.5 damage and 2 while the final one deals 3 and launches enemies away in the air. This attack starts with using his palm to slap the enemies quickly two times and then follows with two variations.

One finisher is multi hit water attack while the second one is double-palmed water attack. You can pick any of the finishers since both will knock away enemies from Greninja and deal decent amount of damage to them. If you know the final hit is going to land, pick the flurry water attack.

Dash Attack

Greninja’s Dash attack will deal 8 damage to enemies and launch them up in perfect position for a follow-up combo. For this attack, Greninja will charge and land a powerful sliding kick to the enemies which will launch them high in the air. This will allow you to follow up with attacks such as up air attack. This will further set them up for a juggle attack.

Defensive Attacks

Greninja’s ledge attack will deal 9 damage while the faceup and facedown Wake-up attack will deal 7 damage each.

Tilts

Greninja has three Tilt attacks. We have detailed them below.

Side Tilt

It deals 7.3 damage. This is a powerful spin-kick attack which will knock the enemies back from you. You also have the option to make the kick a little higher or lower by using the control stick. This attack is good and powerful as well but enemies coming down from the air can take you down with a combo.

Up Tilt

It deals 4.5 damage. Greninja will crouch and attack the air above with his tongue in a fierce lashing movement. Enemies hit by the tongue will be lifted in the air setting them up for a follow up attack. The tongue will hit enemies at the back first and then goes up in the air. You can later follow up enemies for a follow up attack.

Down Tilt

It deals 4 damage. Greninja will land a quick attack at the enemy’s feet. This is a quick attack and can pop them up a little bit. This attack is excellent for poking at enemies’ shields and provoking an attack from them since the attack is extremely quick and there is not recovery time after the attack so you can keep poking at them with this attack.

Smashes

Greninja has three Smash attack and we have detailed them below.

Side Smash Attack

It deals 14 damage. This is a heavy front water kunai attack which slashes in front of Greninja. Enemies hit by this attack will be sent flying back. This attack also features a decent range and a decent speed. This attack is a good move if you want to punish someone who just missed an attack on you. If you miss this attack, get ready for an incoming attack as the recovery time is a little high.

Up Smash Attack

It deals 5 and 14 damage to enemies. Greninja will attack the air above him with a kunai in both hands and will end the attack with a double sided slash. The ending move deals a great amount of damage to enemies.

Down Smash Attack

It deals 13 damage to enemies. Greninja will slash both sides with a powerful slash holding kunai in both hands. This is excellent for clearing out enemies on both sides and getting some space freed up around you. This also works excellent if you want to exploit enemies who land dodges at the wrong time. If you miss, well you know the rest. The enemies won’t be so lenient as well.

Grabs

Greninja’s normal grab attack deals 1 damage and Front throw will deal 8 damage. Throwing them at the Back will deal them 9 damage. Both Up and Down throw will deal 5 damage to the enemies with each setting them up for follow up combos up and down respectively.

When Greninja grabs, it grabs with water which will deal 1 damage upon grabbing. Use grabs often as they are very helpful when playing with Greninja. The most effective throw is down throw because it is the easiest to follow up with more attacks.

Aerial Attacks

Greninja has five aerial attacks which can be performed while Greninja is in the air. We have detailed them below.

Neutral Air Attack

It deals 11 damage. For this attack, Greninja will switch to ninjutsu and discharge water from his body in all directions dealing damage to anyone hit by it. This attack might cover all directions but is slow to start and the recovery time is also great.

You will need good timing with this attack to be effective. The active damage window is also short for this attack. This attack is best if you use while fast-falling. Timing is very important with this attack.

Forward Air Attack

It deals 14 damage. Greninja will use his water kunai to slash in front of himself which deals damage to enemies. Anyone hit by the attack is launched backwards in the air. This attack is good for KO attempts. The starting is a little slow and the recovery time is also more so you will need to time it right for most effectiveness.

Back Air Attack

It deals 3.0, 2.5 and 6 damage. Greninja will turn around and land three powerful kicks to enemies at the back. This is a very fast attack and excellent move for keeping enemies from coming back up from the edges. This attack can also help in landing some KOs. You will need to time this attack right as well. Each hit will deal a different amount of damage to the enemies.

Up Air Attack

It deals 1.3×5 and 3 damage. For this attack, Greninja will flip upside down and land a powerful multi-kick attack above in the air in the form of a corkscrew. This attack is Greninja’s best air attack and can take down any enemies coming to attack you from the air. After getting hit, enemies will be in a perfect position for a juggle follow up.

Down Air Attack

It deals 8 damage to enemies. For this attack, after pausing for a bit, Greninja will fall down to the ground just like ninjas do and damage enemies caught on the way down and finally landing on an enemy or the ground. If you land on an enemy, Greninja will deal damage to it and then bounce off back on the ground.

If you do not hit any enemy, Greninja will fall down to the ground and will take a decent amount of time to recover. So timing is again important here. If you land this attack on an enemy near the edge of the stage, you will kick them off the stage easily with a powerful hit.

Special Moves

Greninja comes with four special moves that we have detailed below.

Neutral Special Attack – Water Shuriken

It deals 3 damage at the minimum which can go up to 12 if fully charged. For this attack, Greninja will throw a water shuriken from his hands in front of him. This deals damage according to the initial charge of the attack. If you charge the attack to full, it will deal the maximum damage. Once fully charged, the attack will also pass through enemies.

Side Special – Shadow Sneak

It deals 10 damage. You can hold the attack button to increase the range of the attack. For this attack, Greninja will hide in a tornado and then reappear later to land a powerful kick. If Greninja appears behind a cloud, it will deliver a rising kick. If you manage to appear behind an enemy, Greninja will land a read kick.

Both the attacks deal the same amount of damage and also you appear in a form where you can launch another attack right after this one specially if you perform it in the air. There is no recovery phase and you can easily use this attack to launch enemies out of the stage as well.

Up Special – Hydro Pump

It deals zero damage but it allows Greninja to change direction quickly. This is purely a recovery move and it does not deal any sort of damage to the enemies. Greninja will launch in the air in a powerful jet stream.

You can aim the direction of the stream to move away from that direction even after starting the launch. You can even turn it around completely after launching the attack. You can also use this to harass recovering enemies by pushing them around.

Down Special – Substitute

It deals 11 damage to enemies. For this attack, Greninja will enter a parry mode and once an enemy manages to land an attack, Greninja will disappear and then suddenly appear to land a powerful flying kick to the enemy who had attacked Greninja. You can control the direction of the flying kick to throw enemies in your desired direction.

You can throw them up, down, left or right by choosing on the control stick. Greninja will appear in the respective positing and land the flying kick to launch the enemies in that specific direction. You can use this move to throw enemies off the stage and send them flying high in a perfect spot for some follow up combos or juggle combos.

Final Smash – Secret Ninja Attack

Greninja’s Final Smash takes enemies high into the air. Unleash the final smash to use Mat Block to flip enemies into the air. In the air, Greninja will keep slashing at the enemies and then ultimately smash them back to the ground. You must get close to the enemies before starting the attack before the range of Mat Block is low.
