Ice Climbers Detailed Guide – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Our Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Ice Climbers Guide details everything that you need to know about Ice Climbers in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Introduction

Popo and Nana both come with their own unique attacks in the game. Both also come with their own health because if one of them gets hit, the other one does not which makes them unique as compared to other duos in the game. This also opens up a wide variety of attacks with both of them. If one of them gets hit, the other one can retaliate quickly with a counter attack. Some of their attacks will be together but most of their attacks are separate and Popo will always be in the lead ahead of Nana.

Their best combat area is ground. Their combos are also good against enemies who rely on shield too much. It is vital that you keep both of them together because if they are separated, their attacks become weaker and some of the attacks can only be performed if they are together. Popo is one of the weakest fighters in the game on his own.

Before we start with the guide, it is worth noting that since they are two separate characters, each deals their own unique amount of damage to enemies. In our guide below, the damage will have a ‘/’ and will show values on each side. This shows damage of Popo/Nana in this sequence for the entire guide.

Attacks

We have detailed Ice Climbers’s moves below.

Grounded Attacks

We have detailed Ice Climbers’ grounded attacks below. These attacks can only be performed while they are on the ground.

Neutral Attacks

Ice Climbers’ neutral attack combo is a combination of four hits, two by each. Both Popo and Nana will swing their hammers one after the other. The first swing will deal 2 -1.5 damage to enemies while the second swing will deal 3.5 – 2.6 damage to enemies. If you manage to land both attacks on your enemies, the enemies will be knocked back in the air.

Dash Attacks

Their Dash attack will deal 6/4.5 damage to the enemies and launch them in the air above the Ice Climbers. Both Popo and nana will run towards the enemies and swing their hammers up in the air. Once enemies are launched in the air, you can land a juggle combo on them. If this attack is shielded, Ice Climbers are left in a vulnerable position.

Defensive Attacks

Their ledge attack deals 8/6 damage while wake-up attack will deal 7/5.2 damage to enemies.

Tilts

Ice Climbers have three Tilt attacks. We have detailed them below.

Side Tilt

It deals 9/6.8 damage. Ice Climbers will land a powerful horizontal hammer attack in front of them. This will knock the enemies hit by the attack away and you can follow up with another attack. Even if the enemy shields the attacks, you have nothing much to lose as you can avoid the counterattacks easily.

Up Tilt

It deals 0.8×6/0.6×6, 3/3 damage to enemies. For this attack, Popo and Nana will swing their hammers in the sky. This attack will hit enemies multiple times until the hammers keep spinning in the air above them. This attack is purely an anti-air attack and does do much against enemies who are on the ground. The area which can deal damage to enemies is above Ice Climbers and slightly on their sides but in the air.

Down Tilt

It deals 6/4.5 damage to enemies. This time, Nana and Popo will sit down and throw the swords at their enemy’s feet which will knock them away. Even if this attack is shielded, you are on the safe side because both will be crouched low to the ground and will miss most of the counterattacks.

Smashes

Ice Climbers come with three Smash attacks and we have detailed them below.

Side Smash

This attack deals 12/9 damage to enemies. It will deal massive knockback and launch the enemies in the air away from the pair. For this attack, Ice Climbers will lift their hammers high in the air and drop them on the ground in one massive blow. Apart from sending them flying away, this attack also deals massive damage to enemies.

The main area of damage for this attack is the area right in front of Ice Climbers where the hammers fall. Although the attack comes from the air, the damage is only focused on the smash. Do not use it to counter enemies coming from the air.

Up Smash

This attack deals 11/8.2 damage to enemies. It launches them away in the air as well. For this attack, Ice Climbers will swing their hammer up and perform a big arc attack above them. The attack will go all the way to the back and enemies will be knocked back in the air after this attack. This is a good attack to keep enemies away from you but if your enemies shield the attack, you will be left vulnerable for an attack.

Down Smash

This attacks deals 13/9.8 damage to enemies. This attack will launch enemies away from the pair. This is a great dual side coverage plan. For this attack, Nana will sweep his hammer at the front with Popo swinging his hammer at the back of the duo. This quick attack can easily cover both sides and launch enemies hit by the hammer in the air.

Grabs

Ice Climbers’ normal grab attack will deal 1 damage when they grab an enemy. If thrown at the front or up, enemies will take 8 damage. Throwing them back or down will deal 6 damage to them. The up throw is a good and powerful throw while if thrown down, enemies will get knockback and get thrown away from the duo setting them up for a perfect combo follow up.

For this attack, Popo will be the one doing the grabbing and throwing. During grab throws, you will not be able to control Nana. This is good because otherwise it would have been unfair for the enemies getting thrown and beat down at the same time. Popo’s grabbing range is also not too great and the start is even slower.

Aerial Attacks

Ice Climbers’ can also perform some special Aerial attacks. We have detailed them below.

Neutral Air Attack

It deals 7/5.2 damage. For this attack, Popo and Nana will jump in the air and land a powerful aerial spin attack which can deal damage to enemies both at the front and at the back. This is a good attack if you want to combine it with other combos. The recovery time is also low allowing you to perform attacks right after this attack.

Forward Air Attack

It deals 12/9 damage to enemies. For this attack, Ice Climbers will jump and land a powerful somersault hammer attack at their front. Nana’s smash also has a meteor effect to it so anyone caught in the arc will be knocked back. This attack has good damage dealing capabilities but the duo will need a moment to recover before they are ready to attack again. Use this on enemies who are on the edge and about to do down.

Back Air Attack

It deals 9/6.8 damage to enemies. For this attack, Nana and Popo will turn around and stick a powerful hammer attack right into enemy’s face. This attack has a slightly more recovery time but the damage is much higher. You can still use this in the form of a combo with dash attack. You can even use this attack more than once in the air if you are quick enough.

Up Air Attack

It deals 9/6.8 damage to enemies. Popo and Nana will jump in the air and perform a powerful attack in the air. This will swing enemies higher in the air if they are already in the air. If your enemies are taller, chances are that will be hit by the start and the end of the attack. The back end goes deeper so it will be more likely to hit enemies rather than the front side of the arc.

Down Air Attack

It deals 8/6 damage to enemies. From the air, Ice Climbers will jump to the ground and unleash a powerful smash on the ground. Enemies caught in the blast will be knocked back due to the force of the slam. They can be followed up with a possible combo or a juggle combo. The recovery time from this attack is slightly high so you will need to time this right.

Special Attacks

Ice Climbers have four special attacks which we have detailed below.

Neutral Special Attack – Ice Shot

It deals 3.5/3.5 damage to enemies. This is a good ranged attack. Both Popo and Nana will summon ice blocks and use their hammers to knock them ahead into enemies. The ice blocks will slide a good distance knocking into enemies and damaging them. These blocks can also bounce off the walls and if Ice Climbers touch them, they will be damaged as well.

Side Special Attack – Squall Hammer

It deals 2.2×4/2.2×4, 8 damage to enemies. Ice Climbers will spin at their location and knock both enemies at the back using their hammers with a powerful spin attack. During this attack, both Nana and Popo will hit enemies both at the front and at the back. You can control them both and make them move left and right with it.

You can even jump them up slightly if you use special inputs. This can be used as a useful recovery tool. This attack has a long recovery time so if you miss the attack, your enemy will exploit it and land some combos on you if you are not careful enough. You can minimize this if you try to finish the attack in the air and then drop on the ground.

Up Special Attack – Belay

It deals 0/16 damage to enemies. Both Popo and Nana will use a rope for this attack. With the rope in their hands, first Popo will launch Nana in the air above him which will cause Nana to go up and reach the point where the rope reaches the limit.

At this point, Nana will pull Popo up as well. Nana will hit enemies on the way up and damage and throw enemies back in the air. This can be used as a recovery attack as well.

Down Special Attack – Blizzard

It deals 1.8(1.0)x9/1.8(1.0)x9 damage to enemies. This attack will launch an ice beam from Ice Climbers hands and it will freeze all enemies close to them. This attack works only at the front but the enemies frozen with it cannot move around the map. You can continue to do so until the enemies start getting freeze damage. This attack is basically in the form of small ice projectiles which deal ice damage and freeze enemies at the same time.

Once frozen, you can continue to repeat the attack to keep damaging them. This is one of their best attacks but the main problem is that this attack requires time to land so you will need to time it correctly. Also you can use it to freeze enemies which are trying to recover off the stage or under the ledge. This is a good harassment attack as well.

Final Smash – Iceberg

When the Final Smash meter is full, unleash Ice Climber’s ultimate attack. This will cause a giant iceberg to blast its way through in the middle of the stage. Enemies who land on the iceberg on jump on it will take damage. The best part is that you can control the iceberg and move it left or right.
