King Dedede Detailed Guide – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Our Super Smash Bros. Ultimate King Dedede Guide details everything that you need to know about King Dedede in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Introduction

King Dedede has the ability to float in the air and uses his hammer to dish out some serious damage. His shield breaker is one of the most powerful shield breakers in the game. He can also float in the game after jumping which gives him great air movement time. Most of King Dedede’s attacks are slow to start but they pack quite a punch. Most of his attacks are similar to Kirby so do not be astonished if you see similar moves.

He has his powerful hammer with him in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as well. While playing with him, you will need to time the attacks right since they take some time to initiate. You will have strong attacks and shield shattering attack at your disposal. In addition, King Dedede’s attacks also push through enemy attacks which means that if both King Dedede and the enemy lands an attack at the same time, King Dedede’s attack will not be interrupted.

Attacks

We have detailed King Dedede’s moves below.

Grounded Attacks

We have detailed all of King Dedede’s attacks below that can be performed on the ground.

Neutral Attack Combo

King Dedede’s neutral attack is a combo of three hits with the last one repeating if you hold the button. The first attack deals 2.5 damage, second hit deals 2.2 damage and the last one deals 0.5×7 hits and finishes off with a hit that lands 3 damage. King Dedede will bring out his hammer for his neutral attack combo.

After two forward swings, hold the neutral attack button and King Dedede will start spinning in his place hitting enemies repeatedly with the hammer and then finishing off the combo with a powerful hit knocking them away from King Dedede. The speed of this attack is slow so do not expect to win over speedy fighters with this attack.

Dash Attack

King Dedede’s Dash attack deals 16 damage. King Dedede will jump while running and flop on his enemies with his belly dealing damage to them. King Dedede will slide for some time before recovering for another attack in the front. After that, King Dedede will take some time getting back in the fight so you need to ensure that King Dedede has some distance from enemies after the attack.

Defensive Attacks

King Dedede’s ledge attack deals 10 damage while wake up attack deals 7 damage.

Tilts

King Dedede has three Tilt attacks which are detailed below.

Side Tilt

It deals 2×3 and 3 damage. King Dedede will use his powerful hammer for this attack and poke enemies aggressively with it. The range of King Dedede’s side tilt attack is good so use it to your advantage.

Up Tilt

It deals 10 damage to enemies. King Dedede will lean back and then land a powerful headbutt arc attack which starts from the back and goes to the front. This is a good coverage attack so enemies will have a hard time hitting you because King Dedede’s head will blast through their attacks. Enemies hit above King Dedede will be set for a good follow up combo.

Down Tilt

It deals 10 damage to enemies. King Dedede will crouch and then roll into the enemies. This attack is one of his quickest attacks and a good way to annoy enemies. Recovery time from this attack is slightly higher so you will need to watch out for incoming attacks. If the enemy is too fast for King Dedede’s other attacks, this is a good attack to start a combo with.

Smash Attacks

King Dedede has three smash attacks. We have detailed them below.

Side Smash

It deals 25-35 damage and those simply effected by the tremor of the attack are dealt 11-15.4 damage. This overhead hammer smash is very powerful attack but is equally slow as well. Enemies are hit even when the hammer is swinging for the smash above King Dedede’s head. Initially, the damage will be much lower but once it is in position above King Dedede’s head, the damage will reach maximum.

Upon smashing the ground, the attack will send a powerful tremor which will also deal damage to enemies. You will need to really time this attack because it is a very slow attack but if you manage to land this attack, most of the enemies will be instantly KO’d. We recommend that you do not use this attack while a battle is ongoing. Try to find an enemy occupied somewhere else and then land this powerful attack.

Up Smash

It deals 16-22.4 damage to enemies. It will set them up nicely above King Dedede for a juggle follow up combo. King Dedede will swing his hammer above his head in a powerful arc attack which starts from the front and goes all the way to the back. Enemies standing in King Dedede’s front will also be hit by the attack. At the end, enemies at the back will also be hit by it. Enemies hit by the hammer will fly above King Dedede which can be followed with more combos.

Down Smash

It deals 13-18.2 damage to enemies. King Dedede will get a little low and swing his hammer in a powerful spin attack. This attack will hit enemies both at the front and at the back. This attack is good for clearing out areas on both sides and give King Dedede some space to work his next move.

Grabs

King Dedede’s grab attack deals 1.6 attacks. Front throw will deal 4, 6 damage to enemies while throwing them back will deal 4,9 damage to enemies. Up throw will deal 4,5 damage to enemies and set them up for a nice follow up juggle combo. Down throws will deal 6 damage to enemies and bounce them as well which can be followed by more attacks.

King Dedede grab attack is slow so you will need good timing on them too.  Use throws to set enemies for King Dedede’s slow attacks. King Dedede’s front or back throw will make enemies hit others on the stage which is good move to damage some other enemies on the stage as well.

Aerial Attacks

This section of the guide details King Dedede’s attacks which can be performed in the air.

Neutral Air Attack

It deals 12 damage. For this attack, King Dedede will jump with his arms and legs extended and drop on the ground as a heavy floppy body. This attack deals solid damage and the area of damage is also good. If you are quick enough, you can include another attack before enemies come back in their senses.

Forward Air Attack

It deals 12 damage. In the air, King Dedede will swing his hammer in front of himself in a powerful swing. Enemies can be hit from the top to the bottom. This attack is very good to cover the entire front side of King Dedede with one powerful attack.

Back Air Attack

It deals 16 damage. King Dedede will swing his hammer at his back and hit enemies sneaking behind him. The attack deals solid damage and will have a strong knockback effect.

Up Air Attack

It deals 1×7 and 5 damage to enemies. King Dedede will use his hammer to attack right above himself with a powerful attack. He will keep swinging his hammer during this attack which will land some quick hits to enemies before launching them away with a final powerful attack. This is purely an anti-air attack so you will not hit anyone below you with this attack.

Down Air Attack

It deals 15 damage to enemies. King Dedede will come crashing down to the ground with his hammer outstretched below him and land a powerful smash attack while knocking enemies away while coming down. This is a powerful attack but you will need some precision to land a hit with this attack.

Special Attacks

King Dedede has four special attacks which have been detailed below.

Neutral Special – Inhale

It deals 10 damage to enemies who are sucked in and if enemies sucked in are thrown at other enemies, they will get additional 20 damage. King Dedede’s inhale is similar to Kirby as King Dedede opens his mouth and sucks in enemies standing at his front. You can move around while an enemy is inside King Dedede.

Once sucked in, you can then spit them out in the form of powerful throws. You can consider this special attack like another powerful throw attack which has the highest range. Enemies using shield will also be sucked in. Suck one enemy in and then throw them at enemies to deal additional damage to both of them. You can also inhale incoming projectile attacks and spit them around.

Side Special – Gordo Throw

It deals 14 damage. For this attack, King Dedede will spawn a Gordo and throw it at the enemies in front with a powerful hit. Gordo has spikes on it so it will deal damage to enemies as it continues to go ahead in a powerful bouncy move. With the control stick, you can control the type of bounce Gordo will have while going ahead.

You can choose between low and far and high and close. Low and far will have less bounce but will travel farther. This is the stock movement. You can also make it bounce higher but travel a shorter distance by holding down while King Dedede will launching the Gordo ahead. If you want the maximum height and shortest distance, hold up while King Dedede is launching Gordo.

You will need to be very careful here as your enemies can slap the Gordo back at you. When it happens, you can simply slap it back at the enemies so make sure that you are always ready to slap it back towards your enemies if they manage to slap it back at you.

Up Special – Super Dedede Jump

It deals 15 and 12 damage to enemies in a powerful two hit attack. King Dedede will launch straight up in the air and will travel a long distance up before stopping. You can use the control stick to slightly alter the angle to left or right as King Dedede moves up. At the top, King Dedede will turn upside down with his hammer facing down and come down in a powerful hammer slam attack knocking enemies away from him.

This is a solid recovery attack move because King Dedede travels a lot of distance while going up. You can also press an attack or special attack button right before hitting solid ground to avoid King Dedede’s slam attack at the end of the move. This will make him drift to the ground instead which is not recommended because you might get hit while doing so.

Down Special – Jet Hammer

It deals 12-40 to enemies. Damage increases more you charge the attack before landing it. This is King Dedede’s one of the most powerful attacks. King Dedede will charge his hammer attack longer you hold the button and then ultimately land a powerful hit on enemies right in front of him launching them away from King Dedede. Charge the attack to the maximum if you want to land the most damage with maximum knockback.

Final Smash – Dede Rush

When have a Final Smash ready, you can unleash King Dedede’s Final Smash. You will need to get close to enemies to land this attack. King Dedede will land a powerful swing that will smash enemies away into the air most probably knocking them out.
