Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Luigi Guide

Below we have listed all the attacks that are specific and special to Luigi. Refer to each attack for a better understanding of how Luigi combats in the stage.

Introduction

Luigi brings his own spin in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While he is taller than Mario, he has longer range of attacks, and more hang time during jumps. In addition, he is also very slippery in defense with the ability to crouch walk forward or backwards, capable of dodging underneath threats with the low profile.

Luigi has a lot of moves that are different from his big brother; Mario. He has Green missile which is a lateral torpedo attack with its own small chance to explode with unexpected momentum. Fireball, Green Missile, and dashing grab attempts allow Luigi to attack comfortably from midrange.

Grounded Attacks

This section of the guide contains all the grounded attacks that Luigi can perform while on the stage.

Neutral Attacks

Luigi has 3 Neutral attacks. The first and the second are jabs that deal 2 damage. It is a one two punch combo before following up with the third playful backside bump that deals 4 damage.

Luigi’s first jab is surprisingly fast, and is meant to quickly hit opponents close range. Up close you can hold the Attack button that will produce a three hit combo, but if you are far away, holding the Attack button with result in a flurry of whiffs jabs.

Dash Attack

Luigi’s Dash attack deals 2×4, 4 damage, where Luigi lashes out with one of the fastest hitting dash attacks, a series of give goofy slaps as Luigi lurches to a halt. This sudden lateral attack can even combo right after Luigi’s tilt poke.

Smashes

Luigi has three smash attacks.

Side Smash

This attack deals 15 to 21 damage, where Luigi builds up tension with on hand out, and releases a smash attack that strikes with his arm extended straight ahead. You can also hold up or down, where Luigi’s hand will move diagonally up or down, granting you a little trajectory of the smash.

Up Smash

This attack deals 14 to 19.6 damage where Luigi rears back for up smash before delivering a fierce headbutt that covers back, above, and front angles. The attack begins earliest behind Luigi, then directly above him, and finally the slowest towards the front of him.

Since this smash hits all three angles, it is best for clearing out when you are being surrounded by many enemies. Hitting an enemy who is behind Luigi in this attack, flips them forward over him, while hitting from the front flips them backwards of Luigi.

Down Smash

This attack deals 15 to 21 damage where Luigi falls to the ground and spins with one hand planted. He swings his leg first in front then behind him. This is a kick that covers both sides. The first kick can be a bit slow, but both his kicks behind and in the front have the same power. This kick works best if fighters get too close to Luigi from both the sides.

Defensive Attacks

Luigi has two defensive attacks. The first is the Ledge attack that deals 9 damage, while the second is the Wake-up attack that deals 7 damage.

Tilts

Luigi has three Tilt Attacks.

Side Tilt

This attack deals 9 damage, where Luigi swings a leg out in front for a side kick. This kick can be angled slightly up or down, but don’t use a 45 degree diagonal input as it will then produce an up or down tilt instead.

Up Tilt

This attack deals 6 damage, where Luigi swipes up with a vertical punch, where it acts as a good anti-air attack from opponents. This attack pops grounded enemies up perfectly that can be immediately followed by combo hits of up tilts in a row.

Down Tilt

This attack deals 5 damage, where Luigi turns slightly to poke at the opponent with his back leg at floor level. It hits with the same speed as the other tilt attacks, but is slower than his fast paced neutral attacks.

Luigi retains advantage if his down tilt is shielded. This not only makes him safe from retaliation, but he can also continue with his attack.

Grabs

Luigi has 3 Grab attacks. The first is the Grab attack that deals 1.3 damage that uses his his Poltergust with a suction cup to reel in opponents.. The next is the Front Throw that deals 9 damage, and the Back throw that deals 10 damage, where Luigi can throw the opponent that was reeled in in any direction.

Finally the Up throw deals 3 damage and hurls them high in the air, while the Down Throw deals 3 damage and bounces enemy of the ground before Luigi for a low damage, but leads to lots of different guaranteed follow ups.

Aerial Attacks

This section of the guide will cover all the Aerial attacks that Luigi has.

Neutral Air Attack

This attack deals 12 damage, where Luigi attacks with a short ranged but fast kick, that deals maximum damage with the immediate thrust.  This makes it a great kick for controlling airspace, since you can kick out opponents above, then fast fall into them with the latter part of the move.

Above medium-damage percentages, neutral air attack starts launching victims straight up on contact, meaning any connected neutral air attack can start or perpetuate a juggle combo. This is great for midstage juggles and aggressive air-kicking. Out over the edges of the stages, though, popping enemies higher isn’t what you want, so use back air attack and down air attack when chasing enemies offstage.

Forward Air Attack

This attack deals 8 damage, where Luigi swats forward with a quick slap, which can be followed up with aerial combos. For instance, you can link neutral air attack after you hit an airborne opponent with a forward air attack.

Back Air Attack

This attack deals 14 damage, where Luigi sticks out both legs behind him in a dropkick. This attack is identical to Mario’s but is a bit different because eof his extended jumping periods. Luigi spends more time in the air along an arc that springs up with faster acceleration but descends more leisurely.

Up Air Attack

This attack deals 11 damage, where Luigi whirls backward, kicking upwards, covering angles in front and above him. Up Air attack is best for swinging challengers directly above, and going for juggle follow up after Up or Down throws.

Down Air Attack

This attack deals 10 damage, where Luigi sticks his feet out at a shark downward angle while twirling. Despite the spin, down air attack is a single hit attack. Luigi’s feet are aimed straight down, and the most damage is dealt when hitting square from above.

Special Moves

Luigi has 4 special moves. All of them are detailed below.

Neutral Special – Fireball

This attack deals 6 close and 5 from far. In this attack, Luigi throws a glowing green projectile that tumbles in small loops straight ahead. If it hits a horizontal surface like a wall, it can bounce back.

Side Special – Green Missile

This attack deals 6.2~9.5 to 21(or 25) damage. In this attack, Luigi builds up tension before launching himself forward as the projectile. Uncharged, there’s mild variance in how much this move does, either 6.1 or 9.5 damage. This move can be charged quite a bit, with a wide variance in damage dealt and distance traveled.

Like with Super Jump Punch, there’s a brief intangibility period around the initial active hitting period. The rest of the rocketing attack lacks special defensive properties, but Luigi’s noggin remains a projectile threat during forward momentum. Upon contact, an airborne Luigi may recover and be able to act again in midair before landing. Close to solid ground, Luigi bounces off and lands prone, with lengthy landing lag.

Because it’s Luigi, Green Missile has a few catches. Charge for too long and he’ll shrug, exhausted and vulnerable. It’s easy to tell how long is too long, thankfully; once the gathering energy waves disappear, he’s fully charged, with a split-second left before exhaustion. If a horizontal surface is in rocketing Luigi’s path, there’s a chance he’ll become stuck, embedded like his upper body is a nail in a block of wood. Again, vulnerable.

Up Special – Super Jump Punch

This attack deals 25 damage on the sweet spot, or 1 damage if missed. In this attack, Luigi erupts almost straight upward with a punch. While it hits all the way up, the only good spot to aim with this punch is in front of Luigi.

If the target is close range, Super Jump Punch deals heavy damage and knockback. This can even work in juggle combos, if you jump and position perfectly flush against the floating target before catching them with up special.

Down Special – Luigi Cyclone

This attack deals 2×4, 4 damage where Luigi whips himself into a little cyclone, during which he can be steered left or right a bit. It has a short range suction effect, and subtly pulling in opponents who get too near to the vortex.

Any opponent that gets pulled in the vortex is hit multiple times in the blender before being launched up to the sky by the final spin. This works great if you want to take down multiple enemies, or target airborne opponents.

Final Smash – Poltergust 5000

In this attack, you can collect a Smash Ball for a chance to unleash the full capacity of the Poltergust pack, pulling in items and opponents in a large circle. Anyone that gets sucked in is ejected shortly, and hurled into a dangerous position. This works best in sucking in multiple enemies and throwing them far away.
