Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Palutena Guide

Below we have listed all the attacks that are specific and special to Palutena. Refer to each attack for a better understanding of how Palutena combats in the stage.

Introduction

Palutena is a balanced and unique fighter that specializes in unconventional moves and mobility. Most of her attacks start up slow but deal decent damage. Since she is great on the ground, her grab attacks are incredibly strong, while her neutral attack combo is very reliable move.

Palutena has a dash attack that is uncontestable, allowing you to set up potential grabbing opportunities and juggles. Meanwhile at close range, Palutena depends on spacing between pokes, and then allowing her projectiles towards pestering enemies.

Grounded Attacks

This section of the guide contains all the grounded attacks that Palutena can perform while on the stage.

Neutral Attacks

Palutena has two Neutral Attacks. The first attack deals 3 damage where she extends her staff in front of her, activating bursts of light emanating from its orb. She ends the attack with a launching staff swing.

The second attack deals 0.6xN, 3.5 damage. This attack is followed by the first attack, and has impressive reach and deals high damage if hit.

Defensive Attacks

Palutena has two Defensive Attacks. The Ledge attack deals 9 damage, while the Wake-up attack deals 7 damage.

Dash Attack

This attack deals 9 damage, where Palutena

Smashes quickly extends her shield in front of her, and blows past most enemy attacks and launches them into the air.

This is one of the best attacks Palutena has, as it hits very quickly and has a unique move decimating property that makes her uncontestable and uninterruptible to most other attacks. Once hit with this attack, it launches the opponent and leaves them open to follow up with combos.

Palutena has three smash attacks.

Side Smash

This attack deals 16 damage, where Palutena unleashes a horizontal wing attack. Opponents that are within the range of the attack are knocked away, while those beyond the range are blown back by the force of the wind.

Up Smash

This attack deals 16 damage, where Palutena raises her staff into the air, summoning massive pillar of light in front of her that extends high into the sky. The beam of light launches opponents that are hit by it.

This attack is effective for punishing air dodges, while thanks to its long active period, this attack is great for edge guarding, as it covers most of the possible ledge recovery options that the opponents might have. Enemies can also be hit on the fingers when they try to grab a ledge.

Down Smash

This attack deals 15 damage, where Palutena slams her angel wings downwards by her sides, taking and clearing out opponents in the are in front  and behind of her. The wind effect of this attack is a little weaker, pushing enemies back with less force than Palutena’s side smash. The attack however, covers both sides, so it can be used to punish rolls or hit enemies landing behind Palutena.

Tilts

Palutena has three Tilt Attacks.

Side Tilt

This attack deals 6, 7 damage, where Palutena throws out her staff in front of her, causing two consecutive strikes as it magically rotates in place. Opponents that are struck by this move are knocked away.

Up Tilt

This attack deals 1.4×5, 2.5 damage where Palutena levitates her staff into the air above her, spinning it in place and striking opponents multiple times before sending them vertically into the air.

This attack can be used to punish on the spot dodges and makes for a decent ledge guarding tool that can punish ledge jumps and other low altitude recovery options.

Down Tilt

This attack deals 8.5 damage, where Palutena leans down and flings her spinning staff low to the ground before her, hurling away nearby enemies.

This attack is considerably slow to start, but has a sizable active window that can be used to punish rolls and dodges. However, like her other tilt attacks, it is not an optimal move to use in the neutral game since it leaves Palutena vulnerable.

Grabs

Palutena has five Grab Attacks. The first grab deals 1.3 damage. The Front and Back throw deal 9 and 10 damage respectively. The Up throw deals 8 damage, while the Down throw deals 5 damage.

Palutena’s grab reaches farther than most grabs that are in the game, and is also good with speed. The reach of her grab extends considerably far in front of her, well beyond the average fighters’ grab range.

The Up and Down throw leads into the most potential damage. Against opponents that are around 30% damage, Up throw into Up Air attack, and Down Throw into forward air attack are guaranteed combos.

Meanwhile her Front and Back throws have high knockback distance, which makes it idea for finishing off enemies near the lateral blast zones.

Aerial Attacks

This section of the guide will cover all the Aerial attacks that Palutena has.

Neutral Air Attack

This attack deals 1.4×6, 5.1 damage. In this attack, Palutena spins her staff around in mid air, and strikes any enemy up to six times, with a final hit that launches them away at an angle.

This attack can be followed with another into a combo, however since it has landing lag, it should not be thrown out too often in the neutral game. This attack can also be used as an edge guarding attack if you meet airborne enemies far off a ledge with your multi strike hitboxes, potentially knocking them out for good.

Forward Air Attack

This attack deal 10 damage, where Palutena produces a jumping side kick with a light aura that pops enemies up hit by it. This is an excellent attack to begin with combos. Deep hit into this attack offers several options, where forward air into dash attack or another forward air are such possibilities

Back Air Attack

This attack deals 14 damage, where Palutena while mid-air, uses her shield to bash opponents behind her. Like her dash attack, her back air is also uninterruptible when colliding with opposing attacks.

This attack is your primary edge guarding tool so you should be deliberately standing with your back facing the ledge whenever you force an opponent into ledge recover mode.

Up Air Attack

This attack deals 1×5, 5 damage, where Palutena raises her staff into the air, emitting a light source that ensnares victims with multiple hits before launching them vertically into the sky.

Though this attack has considerable end lag, preventing you from using it and an additional aerial attack from a jump, you can use double jumped Up air attacks to alleviate some of this lag.

Down Air Attack

This attack deals 11 damage, where Palutena downward lick that spikes foes into the ground. Down air attack is fast, but is active for a brief amount of time. Against grounded foes, down air causes an add knockback effect, as it launches the enemy behind you. This sets up potential follow-ups, but it can be punished if shielded.

Special Moves

Palutena has 4 special moves. All of them are detailed below.

Neutral Special – Autoreticle

This attack deals 3.5×3 damage, where Palutena fires a blast of energy at a nearby enemy. The angle of the energy blasts is determined by the enemy’s current position immediately upon performing the move.

Autoreticle synergizes well with Explosive Flame. If you connect with a close Explosive Flame (non-flick version), you can usually combo into Autoreticle. Or from long range, if you can force your opponent to reposition, a follow-up Autoreticle can deter their direct approach.

Side Special – Explosive Flame

This attack deals 1.5×5, 5.5 damage. In this attack, Palutena sets off an expanding flame that explodes a set distance in front of her. This projectile is different from the other conventional projectiles in the game, where Explosive Flame always detonates at its location, even behind opponents standing in front of you.

This attack is incredibly difficult for opponents to deal with due to its large area of effect, forcing enemies to reposition themselves or take shield damage.

Up Special – Warp

In this move, Palutena warps in any direction, becoming invulnerable during her brief disappearance window. This move is an incredible recovery escape tool, however its landing lag from the air can make it punishable, especially if your opponent can predict your teleport direction.

Down Special – Counter / Reflect Barrier

In this move, Palutena doubles as a counterattack parry and projectile reflector. On a successful attack parry, she counterattacks with a radiant light blast, dealing damage based on the damage on the damage of the enemy’s parried attack.

Counter can be used in multiple situations, where you are able to reflect projectiles at the same time.

Final Smash – Black Hole Laser

In the Final Smash Palutena creates a black hole that sucks in any of her opponents. She follows up with a wide laser beam to damage and launch anyone caught in the attack. The Black hole can capture many victims inside, and the beam deals more damage to the ones caught in the hole.
