Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Pikachu Guide

Below we have listed all the attacks that are specific and special to Pikachu. Refer to each attack for a better understanding of how Pikachu combats in the stage.

Introduction

Pikachu comes in the Super Smash world by being a speedy an evasive brawler in the game. It’s attacks are usually fast and hit multiple times over a long active period. The projectiles it has in its arsenal are Thunder Jolts that are harassing and easy to implement.

Since Pikachu is good with mobility, it has many movement special attacks, that give it a fighting chance when launched far away. Being lightweight means Pikachu ha a decent chance of shuffling out of an opponent’s juggle attempts, but means it can be hurled long distance or even knocked out completely.

Grounded Attacks

This section of the guide contains all the grounded attacks that Pikachu can perform while on the stage.

Neutral Attacks

Pikachu has one neutral attack that deals 1.4 damage. This attack is a headbutt jab that Pikachu leans over and delivers rapidly. Pikachu does not have a neutral attack combo with different stages; the same attack repeats itself. If you hold down the neutral attack input, Pikachu repeats the headbutt so quickly it blurs.

Enemies that are caught in the multiple headbutts are hit several times for a combo, but the attach eventually pushes them away.

Dash Attack

This attack deals 11 damage, where Pikachu win run forward and jump with a heavy headbutt that is more powerful that its neutral attack head butt. If you hit it early in the move, you will get the most damage out of the headbutt. But if you hit the opponent in the later stages of the move, you can pop the opponent for a possible follow up juggle.

Smashes

Pikachu has three smash attacks.

Side Smash

This attack deals 18 to 25.2 damage, where Pikachu sends a sparking blast forward from its cheeks. This spark stays active for a long time which makes it a great ground move. The spark deals max damage in the middle of its travel, but does slightly less close to Pikachu.

Up Smash

This attack deals 14 to 19.6 damage, where Pikachu backflips in place, sending its zigzag shaped tail around as a launching attack. The tail hits in the front first, then goes overhead, and finally ends in the back. Whichever angle it hits an opponent, they are knocked up above Pikachu.

The damage dealt is the highest in the front, and lowers as it goes overhead, decreasing further as it goes behind.

Down Smash

This attack deals 2×5, 3-2.8×5, 4.2 damage, where Pikachu spins in place while lying flat on the ground, and sparks flying everywhere. Anyone caught by one of the hits is pulled into the rets, getting hit several times before a stronger final hit launches them low in the direction Pikachu is facing.

Defensive Attacks

There are three Defensive attacks that Pikachu has. The first is the Ledge Attack that deals 10 damage, the second is the facedown Wake-up attack that deals 7 damage, and the third is the facedown Wake-up attack that deals 7 damage.

Tilts

Pikachu has three Tilt Attacks.

Side Tilt

This attack deals 10 damage, where Pikachu plants its front paws to kick forward with its legs. This attack can be aimed up or down, with the upward angle dealing out the most damage. This attack has low knockback so you shouldn’t expect enemies to be knocked out far.

Up Tilt

This attack deals 5 damage, where Pikachu attacks with its tail stretching up over its body from behind, hitting first to the back covering upward and forward angles. Opponents with low percentage are still knocked off their feet in this attack, setting you up for an immediate juggle hit.

Down Tilt

This attack deals 6 damage, where Pikachu shifts to the side to sweep its tail to the front for a quick hit. This hits a tiny bit slower than side tilt while doing less damage, but it has slightly more knockback with opponents at low percentages, and potentially can lift them off their feet.

Grabs

Pikachu has 5 Grab Attacks. The grab attack deals 1 damage, while the front and Back throw deal 2×5 and 9 damage respectively. Finally the Up throw deals 3, 5 damage, and the Down throw deals 5 damage.

Pikachu does not have the fastest of the grabs, however, its front and back throws move enemies to a desired stage edge. During the throws, Pikachu hurls victims straight upward, in position for jumping attack juggle or even an immediate Thunder special move. Down thrown will also bounce them close in front, making it an idea position for an immediate jumping air attack.

Aerial Attacks

This section of the guide will cover all the Aerial attacks that Pikachu has.

Neutral Air Attack

This attack deals 1.8x, 3.5 damage, where Pikachu emits stored electricity in several bursts. This attack does not have range, so you basically have to plow into enemies with Pikachu’s torso. However, this attack lasts a long time making it an excellent all-purpose move.

Forward Air Attack

This attack deals 1.4×5, 4.8 damage, where Pikachu lies prone facing forward in midair, and emits sparks from either side of its head. This attack is slower to hit than neutral air attack, but stays active for a long time once it’s out.

Back Air Attack

This attack deals 1×5, 3.6 damage where Pikachu spins sideways repeatedly in the air.. The range of this attack is extremely short, and on hit, the opponent is blended up for a second before being kicked away behind Pikachu. When catching opponents air to air, this attack hits quick and lags so little that you can often combo immediately with another back air double jumpijng as soon as the one finishes.

Up Air Attack

This attack deals 6 damage, where Pikachu swats anyone above with its tail. This hit is very fast, and is great for the usual purpose of attacking upward and juggling, but its its so fast, and is Pikachu’s only one quick single-hit jumping attack, it has some use as a late falling jump-in attack too, used against standing targets just before Pikachu lands.

Down Air Attack

This attack deals 13 damage, where Pikachu’s strongest air attack is also its slowest, almost like a downward-aimed smash attack. Use this offstage when trying to spike recovering foes downward, and midstage when falling on grounded foes. Down air attack has unique landing lag if used just before hitting the ground, with Pikachu’s touchdown force capable of delivering a secondary hit. Drop on someone with a perfectly aimed down air, and you net the falling attack’s damage plus the landing hit

Special Moves

Pikachu has 4 special moves. All of them are detailed below.

Neutral Special – Thunder Jolt

This attack deals 5 damage, where Pikachu produces its staple projectile attack, a small bouncing thunderbolt that is fired at its desired direction. Once released, the Thunder Jolt projectile travels down-forward toward a hard surface, and once it hits a hard surface, it bolt travels along any continuous surface bouncing at least seven times before it disappears.

The bolt can also travel up sheer walls and curl around corners to keep travelling along their paths. In addition, Thunder Jolts can be fired repeatedly, up to three on screen if you throw the first one while airborne.

Side Special – Skull Bash

This attack deals 6.2/10 to 21.4 damage, where Pikachu launches suddenly to one side, and flies laterally with a spinning electric headbutt. This sends Pikachu rocketing across about four dashes worth of distance. Its damage that it deals stays constant no matter how late you hit an opponent with this attack.

When used near the ground, it has a considerable landing lag at the end, but if you use it mid-air. You can act again after Skull Bash ends.

Up Special – Quick Attack

This attack deals 2, 3 damage, where upon inputting Up Special, Pikachu briefly preps for a moment while waiting for you to input a different direction. If you don’t, Pikachu zips straight upward. If you hold a direction, Pikachu zips precisely in a straight line in that direction. During this zipping movement, hold a different direction to make Pikachu zip a second time along the new heading.

Each zip deals a little damage, with the second zip being slightly stronger, but this move’s purpose isn’t really attacking. It greatly reinforces Pikachu’s status as a lightning-fast, erratically moving combatant who’s hard to pin down.

Down Special – Thunder

This attack deals 8/15 damage, where Pikachu calls from the sky a powerful lightning bolt that streaks straight down toward Pikachu’s location. The bolt has a long vertical hitbox and can hit anyone above Pikachu while still streaming downward. If the bolt hits Pikachu, it then explodes in an even more powerful hit, that strikes anyone nearby.

Final Smash – Volt Tackle

In the final smash attack, Pikachu travels laterally in a flash upon activation, starting a full-screen crisscrossing attack upon contact with the first opponent. Pikachu scurries back and forth rapidly in blue flashes, focusing on the main target but fully capable of hitting everyone else that is in its way.
