Super Smash Bros. Ultimate R.O.B. Guide

Below we have listed all the attacks that are specific and special to R.O.B.. Refer to each attack for a better understanding of how R.O.B. combats in the stage.

Introduction

R.O.B. is a highly mobile heavyweight fighter who is best for defensive stage controlling brawler. He comes equipped with his powerful Robo Beam and Gyro projectiles, that force enemies to make mistakes and for R.O.B. to capitalize on them.

Though his melee attacks are usually punishable if shielded, he makes it up with the long range game he is so good in. R.O.B. is also good in defending from airborne attacks with his thrust based attacks.

Grounded Attacks

This section of the guide contains all the grounded attacks that R.O.B. can perform while on the stage.

Neutral Attacks

R.O.B. has two Neutral attacks.  R.O.B. swings both his arms in front of him for a quick two hit punch that deal 3 damage each. Since R.O.B. specializes in projectile based attacks, using is neutral attack a lot is not a safe option. The neutral jabs are decent enough to end off opponents at a point black range but do not deal much damage, forcing you to commit to staying grounded briefly.

Defensive Attacks

R.O.B. has two Defensive attacks. The ledge attack deals 9 damage, while the Wake-up attack deals 7 damage.

Dash Attack

This attack deals 7 damage, where R.O.B. slams his arm down into the ground , launching enemies up and away while allowing you to follow up with combos. This attack is highly punishable if shielded, and he cannot pass through enemies also, so you should rather continue with a throw combo after a dash attack.

Smashes

R.O.B. has three smash attacks.

Side Smash

This attack deals 15 damage, where R.O.B. fires an energy beam from its eyes, blasting enemies with a high knockback power. The trajectory of the beam can be slighted adjusted upward or downward towards the opponent’s feet.

This attack has incredible damage and range stats, but is easily punishable. Its range is best used against enemies that are recovering on the ledge, where if you time it well, you can guarantee a knocking out enemies with higher percentages.

Up Smash

This attack deals 3, 14 damage, where R.O.B. performs a handstand, then fires his thrusters directly above him. Enemies that are caught in the burst are thrown higher into the sky.

This attack is best used to finish off enemies into the up blast zone. The thruster hitbox makes it a solid anti-air option if you can time it, but generally you Up Smash hits are based of predicting enemy movement.

Down Smash

This attack deals 3, 3.5, 5 damage, where R.O.B. spins at high speed with his arms extended outwards, striking any nearby enemies several times before launching them away.

This attack covers both angels in front and behind R.O.B., so it can be used as a decent defensive tool against enemies closing in on you. It also a decent range and damage, so while its not safe to just throw the attack randomly, it still can be worth the risk to get you out of a stick situation.

Tilts

R.O.B. has three Tilt Attacks.

Side Tilt

This attack deals 10 damage, where R.O.B. punches with one arm in the front that launches enemies away. This attack can be angled upward or downward. This is a good ground based poke against opponents that are just beyond your neutral attack reach.

Again, since R.O.B. is great with his projectiles, it doesn’t make any sense in getting close to the opponent and jabbing them with punches. So you are better off with your projectile based attacks.

Up Tilt

This attack deals 3, 5 damage. In this attack, R.O.B. thrust both his arm over his head, launching enemies above him in the air for a potential follow up. If you can successfully land a hit on an opponent coming for an air attack, you can follow up this attack with a a combo follow up.

Down Tilt

This attack deals 5 damage, where R.O.B. leans down on the ground and stabs at the feet of the enemy that staggers them. This is a fast start up and low lag attach with a mid-percentage range.

This attack can be chained as a combo if you repeat with another Down tilt, plus against certain fighters, this attack can be chained into four Down tilt hits. This attack also works great to keep in recovering enemies on the ledge in check.

Grabs

R.O.B. has five Grab Attacks. His first grab deals 1.3 damage. The Front and Back throw deal 8 and 10 damage, respectively. The Up throw deals 12 damage, while the Down throw deals 5 damage.

R.O.B.s grab is quick but doesn’t have a lot of range. Most of his grab throws have the potential to follow up with more attacks, where his Up throw can be followed with more attacks immediately after tossing an enemy up.

Down throw is not so great considering that it deals low damage, and that some fast paced opponents can avoid your follow up attacks altogether.

Aerial Attacks

This section of the guide will cover all the Aerial attacks that R.O.B. has.

Neutral Air Attack

This attack deals 9.5 damage, where R.O.B. fires his thrusters while delivering a somersault attack, hitting enemies around him from the burners. This attack has low landing lag that allows him to clear out enemies around him.

This attack always guarantees a safe combo follow up, where you can follow up at almost any damage range as long as you hit with the latest end of the move. Against low percentage opponents or when opponents are coming towards you from an upward angle, you can hit neutral air attack canceled into a fast fall, then immediately Up tilt and then Up air. This will deal at least 30% damage.

Forward Air Attack

This attack deals 7 damage, where R.O.B. swings his arms forward slapping opponents with a low knockback power. This attack is very fast and good air to air and air to ground poke attack. It has low air lag, and low landing lag.

This attack is best used if you find yourself in a tight spot and need some breathing space to get your projectiles going again.

Back Air Attack

This attack deals 12 damage, where R.O.B. aims his burners behind him and fires them. This attack devastates enemies behind, while also thrusting R.O.B. forward.

This attack has high knockback power which allows you an effective edge guarding tool. Once you throw an enemy off the stage, put your back toward the ledge and use this attack to blast recovering enemies while boosting yourself inward to safety.

Up Air Attack

This attack deals 1.5×4, 4 damage, where R.O.B. spins both arms vertically in an alternating rhythm, rapidly striking foes above him before sending them off with a double-armed launch. Up air attack is your juggle-trap tool and air-combo finisher. It starts up quickly and hits several times, but has a relatively strict hit effect, covering only the area directly above R.O.B.

Down Air Attack

This attack deals 12 damage, where R.O.B. jumps above an enemy and activates his base thrusters, boosting his altitude slightly while meteor smashing foes beneath him. Down air attack has considerable air lag, but since it boosts you up into the air, you never have landing lag after landing from a down air.

Down air almost always causes a meteor smash if it hits. Use it against offstage foes to knock them into the lower blast zone while increasing your altitude slightly. Its hitbox is narrow, though, only covering the thruster area below R.O.B.’s base.

Special Moves

R.O.B. has 4 special moves. All of them are detailed below.

Neutral Special – Robo Beam

In this attack, R.O.B. fires his Robo beam that goes all the way across the stage. This beam deals more damage the more it is charged.

Robo Beam can be angled upward or downward, while every five seconds you have access to an extremely powerful projectile. This is a very powerful threat for your opponents and can keep them on the edge waiting for your beam. Using the Robo Beam with the Gyro can keep opponents on their toes, making mistakes in trying to dodge your fake pre fire.

Side Special – Arm Rotor

This attack deals 1.5x 5 or 10, 3 damage. In this attack, R.O.B. produces an Arm Rotor attack that hits an opponent several times, then completes the move with an uppercut punch, launching enemies high up in the air.

This attack can be used as an edge guarding tool where recovering victims will have to deal with R.O.B.’s Arm Rotors and then the uppercut, potentially knocking them out for good.

Arm Rotor has extreme end lag, so its is incredibly risky to throw haphazardly, especially if you are grounded

Up Special – Robo Burner

In this attack, R.O.B. fires up his burners and boosts himself in the air, where he can fly even higher, or hover in the air as long as the fuel lasts.

This attack does not deal any damage, but allows you to stay airborne which can be followed by many attacks, or can be used to chase those pesky airborne enemies that rely on attacks from the air.

Down Special – Gyro

This attack deals 4 + (4.5 to 6.7) damage. In this attack, R.O.B. pulls out a top and revs it up before releasing it. The top then flies towards the enemy and knocks them away. The more it is revved up, the more speed it has and damage potential.

The Gyro is great for knocking enemies down. If your Gyro is shielded, it will immediately disappear, allowing you to follow up with another one to send at your victim.

Final Smash – Guided Robo Beam

In the Final Smash, R.O.B. fires homing lasers at multiple targets, and then fires a giant beam that hits multiple victims. In this attack, you can angle the beam upward or downward however you wish.
