Introduction

Roy and Chrom share similar types of attacks in the game with a few key differences. Roy’s strikes have sweet and sour spots, rewarding you for accurate critical hits, while Chrom’s damage is distributed evenly across his hitboxes. If we detailed their damage stats, you will see that Roy deals higher damage, depending how good of hit you get on your victims.

Grounded Attacks

This section of the guide contains all the grounded attacks that Roy and Chrom can perform while on the stage.

Neutral Attacks

Both Roy and Chrom attack with an upward slash that clears the opponents standing in front. Roy’s attack deals 7.5, while Chrom’s attack deals 6.5 damage.

Like a typical jab, this is a fast strike, though it cant be followed with another attack, not it can be chained for a combo. However, it has a good hitbox coverage where it has the entire space in front of you where it hits to deal damage.

Defensive Attacks

Roy and Chrom share the same Defensive Attacks, with the same amount of damage. The Ledge attack deals 10 damage, while the faceup and facedown Wake-up attacks both deal 7 damage.

Dash Attack

Roy’s dash attack deals 13 damage, while Chrom’s dash attack deals 12 damage. In this attack, both characters run at the enemy and slash at the victims shins with a strong launching attack that sends them up and away.

This attack is slow, but deals high damage. The closer the hit is, the more damage it deals to opponents. While if it hit from far, it only has a little knockback effect.

Smashes

Roy and Chrom have three smash attacks.

Side Smash

Roy’s attack deals 20 damage, while Chrom’s attack deals 18 damage. In this attack, Roy or Chrom swing their sword in front of them and into the ground. This attack blasts nearby enemies away. For Roy, the attack to deal its high damage requires his to hit from point black range. Nonetheless, even if you hit from the mid-range, you still deal at least 17 damage.

Up Smash

Roy’s attack deals 1, 2×3, 10 damage, while Chrom’s attack deals 1, 2×3, 10 damage. In this attack, Roy or Chrom charge up their sword to thrust it in the sky. This causes a big blast that throws the nearby victims away.

While this attack is slow to start, it deals massive damage if all of its hit connects the opponent. Its best used as a finisher attack, and certainly not to be used as a poke. It is highly punishable if your side smash is shielded or whiffed.

Down Smash

Roy’s attack deals 15, 17.1 damage, while Chrom’s attack deals 12.4, 14.2 damage. In this attack, both our brawlers use their swords to sweep in the front and the back, clearing out enemies nearby on both ends.

This attack leaves Roy highly vulnerable and should be use as a last resort to clear out some space around you.

Tilts

Roy and Chrom have three Tilt Attacks.

Side Tilt

Roy’s attack deals 12.5 damage, while Chrom’s attack deals 10.9 damage. In this attack, Roy or Chrom step forward to produce a speedy downward slash, that slices enemies and knocking them away.

This is a very fast attack that has the hitbox at the head of these brawlers, which makes this attack a great anti-air counterattack

Up Tilt

Roy’s attack deals 12 damage, while Chrom’s attack deals 10.4 damage. In this attack, Roy or Chrom swing their sword upward. This slash starts from the front, follows up above their heads, and ends towards the back of them. This attack starts up quickly and has a great coverage all the way to the back.

The high amount of damage from this attack makes it a great anti-air and even though it doesn’t start combos, its vertical launching effect is strong for you to mount your anti-air juggle trap game.

Down Tilt

Roy’s attack deals 11 damage, while Chrom’s attack deals 9 damage. In this attack Roy or Chrom crouch low to the ground and thrust their swords at the opponent’s feet. This attack knocks the opponent of their feet.

Since this attack is fast paced and has limited ending lag, it is rarely punishable if your opponent shields this attack. In addition, if you successfully hit your opponent with this attack, the knocking of the enemy off their feet allows for multiple follow up attacks.

Grabs

Roy and Chrom share the same damage stats with their Grab Attacks. The first grab deals 1.3 damage. The Front and Back throw both deal 5 damage each. The Up throw deals 6 damage, while the Down throw deals 5 damage.

Aerial Attacks

This section of the guide will cover all the Aerial attacks that Roy and Chrom have.

Neutral Air Attack

Roy’s attack deals 6, 8.5 damage, while Chrom’s attack deals 4.8 damage. In this attack Roy or Chrom jump in the air and produce two horizontal swipes. As the blade spins, it hits the enemy in front and then spins all the way round to the back.

This attack covers both angles in front and behind you, being versatile, it can also be used to set up juggle combos with its first hit at low altitudes.

Forward Air Attack

Roy’s attack deals 11 damage, while Chrom’s attack deals 9 damage. In this attack Roy or Chrom cut with their sword angling down in front of the enemies as they fall towards them.

This attack is best used if you hop towards the opponent and then activate this attack. As it has a wide range of hitbox in front, it can be used aggressively to damage enemy shields and them following up with a grab attempt.

Back Air Attack

Roy’s attack deals 12 damage, while Chrom’s attack deals 10.9 damage. In this attack Roy or Chrom turn around and produce an uppercut slash. It is quite similar to forward air attack, but allows you freedom to turn around on command while airborne.

This attack is also not laggy, so you can easily implement this attack as a n edge guarding strategy. With your back facing to the ledge, you can threaten and safely attack recovering opponents by jumping off the ledge and going for a back air attack.

Up Air Attack

Roy’s attack deals 9 damage, while Chrom’s attack deals 7.6 damage. In this attack Roy or Chrom slash in the above them, and hits any opponent in the air above, to send them higher in the sky.

This attack is best to start a juggle combo when hit deep. You can combo Blazer, forward air attack, up tilt or even up air attack.

Down Air Attack

Roy’s attack deals 15 damage, while Chrom’s attack deals 14.2 damage. In this attack Roy or Chrom slashes a swing beneath them, hitting opponents with the blade. This attack deals more damage as Roy or Chrom stab directly down. This attack is difficult to be accurate with so you should just reserve it to smash down on the ground.

Special Moves

Roy and Chrom have 4 special moves. All of them are detailed below.

Neutral Special – Flare Blade

Roy’s attack deals 8 (50Max) damage, while Chrom’s attack deals 8 (50 Max) damage. In this attack Roy or Chrom’s blade erupts as it comes down. If the attack is fully charged, it also hits the Roy.

Flare Blade may seem like a clunky and risky attack to use in the neutral game, but it’s quite safe on shield block thanks to low amount of lag and high amount of shield hitstun. It’s particularly useful used as a descending aerial move and as an edge-guarding attack, potentially hitting foe fingers just as they grab a ledge.

Side Special – Double-edge Dance

This is a combo hit attack, where Roy can switch to slash types attack that either launch the enemy, knock the enemy or stab them continuously for extra damage.

The variations are such that if you use forward swing, it knocks enemies off platforms. If you up swing, it will launch the enemy above you in order to mix them up or challenge their potential descending attacks. The down swing, is for dealing the most amount of damage, and to set up pressure situations as the enemy is thrown down.

Roy’s Up Special – Blazer

Roy’s attack deals 5.5, 1.1×3, 8 damage. In this attack Roy produces his sword in flames, and leaps high in the sky with a jumping slash.

Blazer is intangible briefly and invincible for additional hits, allowing you to blow through opposing attacks for a brief window during its start-up. If you’re being pressured while blocking, you can drop shield and use Blazer to blow through enemy attacks. If you’re beneath a platform, Blazer becomes a bit safer, as you’ll blow through enemy attacks while landing on the middle platform above.

Chrom’s Up Special

Chrom’s attack deals 6, 1.5, 1.5, 6, 6 damage. In this attack Chrom knocks the opponent into the air, following up his combo sequence with a dive bomb sword attack that launches enemies away.

Chroms up special is different to Roy’s as in you can influence your trajectory. It deals high damage.

Down Special – Counter

Roy’s attack deals 1.35 damage, while Chrom’s attack deals 9 damage. In this attack Roy or Chrom absorb enemy attack, and returns with an even strong counter attack.

This attack can be used mid-air, and as an anti edge guarding attack. The amount of damage it deals is 1.3 multiplied by the amount of damage the opponent deals you.

Roy’s Final Smash – Critical Hit

In this attack, Roy swings his blade around to catch enemies, then brings the blade down to finishes them off in a blast of fire. This attack covers both ends behind and in front of Roy.

Chrom’s Final Smash – Awakening Aether
