Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Wario Guide

Below we have listed all the attacks that are specific and special to Wario. Refer to each attack for a better understanding of how Wario combats in the stage.

Introduction

Wario comes in the world of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate by being a heavy brawler but having some of the best air speed of others in the game. With his motorcycle he can quickly steer laterally when airborne, with his neutral and forward air attacks both being fast hitting and long lasting.

Wario’s air speed is good for him to get close so he can use his Chomp. Chomp is a throw that heals Wario but hurts the opponent. Chomp also works on items. You can clear the board of pickups, both to deprive your opposition of them, and toe refill Wario’s health.

Wario also has a very strange explosive option. He collects gas building up in his belly, to release Wario Waft, which is one of the strongest move in the game.

Grounded Attacks

This section of the guide contains all the grounded attacks that Wario can perform while on the stage.

Neutral Attacks

Wario has two Neutral Attacks. Wario swings a jab that deals 4 damage, which is followed by a bigger punch that deals 5 damage. On contact, the second punch launches the opponent into the air, where you can pursue them for a potential juggle.

Defensive Attacks

Wario has two Defensive Attacks. The first one is the Ledge attack that deals 10 damage, while the second one is the Wake-up attack that deals 7 damage.

Smashes

Wario has three smash attacks.

Side Smash

This attack deals 20 to 28 damage, where Wario leans back and swings an oversized fist.  This attack deals huge damage and knockback, but is slow to hit, and will leave Wario wide open if you miss.

Nonetheless, this attack has great knockout potential, as damage adds up. Against opponents are very aggressive, you can run away and side smash at them out of  the dash.

Up Smash

This attack deals 17 to 23.8 damage, where Wario swings rapidly with a headbutt. This attack covers all three angles, however it is not like any other typical up smash where all three angles are covered briefly. So you will have to swing carefully, and keep your priority against descending enemies.

Down Smash

This attack deals 13 to 18.2 damage, where Wario falls down and spins like a top on his back, his spin generates a wobble that leans him front and then back. His damage and spin diminish as the spin speed wears down.

This attack requires a lot of timing precision for something that hits both sides than up smash, and hits faster too. When opponents are hit with this move, they are ether blasted far way, or gives Wario some breathing room.

Tilts

Wario has three Tilt Attacks.

Side Tilt

This attack deals 13 damage, where Wario swats with his hand. This attack can be aimed slightly up or down. The downward angle is best used on the ledge on recovering enemies, as it will send them straight down again.

Up Tilt

This attack deals 6 damage, where Wario slaps both his hands upwards, launching the opponent on hit. This is a quick move considering Wario is a heavy brawler, and has the same speed as the neutral jab attack.

This attack is great for hitting back on airborne enemies, but does not provide the side coverage as his other tilts. But for a reliable double-sided protection, its best to use Down Smash.

Down Tilt

This attack deals 4 damage, where Wario crouches down, and jabs at the opponents feet with a flat hand. This is Wario’s fastest move as he shift down a little and the reach is pretty decent.

This attack can trip low percentage opponents for a moment, and combo into itself if used repeatedly at middle to higher percentages.

Grabs

Wario has four Grab Attacks. The Front Throw deals 4, 8 damage, while the Back Throw Deals 7 damage. The Up Throw deals 4×2 damage, and finally the Down Throw deals 4,7 damage.

When going for normal grabs, front throw can also hit other enemies in close, if they are in the way. Back throw spins the enemy for momentum before the throw, which clears out any number of fighters on both sides. Up throw knocks them upward with a double-fisted punch, leading to combo opportunities right away above. And back throw bounces them behind Wario, not in position for a juggle hit but ripe for you to pursue with a dash attack or hopping move as they try to tech.

Aerial Attacks

This section of the guide will cover all the Aerial attacks that Wario has.

Neutral Air Attack

This attack deals 6 damage, where Wario produces two attacks, with his arms outstretched. This attack is good against other opponents that are airborne, or for jumping in on enemies on the ground.

Once Wario stops spinning,, he drops a belly flop on the ground. This belly flop lasts at least a third of a second which is pretty long. However, you can double jump and neutral air attack, then fast fall to the ground with an active hitbox all the way down. If you land the belly flop on an opponent, it will send them flying into the air.

Forward Air Attack

This attack deals 7 damage, where Wario produces a dropkick that hits fast with decent damage and generous active period. This attack is best used as a poke, whether to short hop or to pursue helpless or recovering targets.

The knockback that this attack offers is low, which means you can go right into quick ground moves after using on a standing target. Like neutral air, this attack also has very little landing lag, making it great for moving from air to ground base offense.

Back Air Attack

This attack deals 12 damage, where Wario produces a backward-leaning surprise headbutt that hits with the crown of Wario’s huge head. The damage and knockback are high, and it covers a small arc from up-back to down-back. The lag on landing is bad, since Wario thuds on his side.

It is an okay-ish attack for smacking grounded enemies if your back is to them in midair for whatever reason, but try to land at max range from them and don’t expect follow-ups. Back air attack is mainly for aiming at jumpers behind midair Wario

Up Air Attack

This attack deals 13 damage, where Wario attacks upward with an oversized clap, just where the hands meet. It might look like it, but it doesn’t cover along Wario’s palms until they meet. Like up smash on the ground, up air attack doesn’t have a long active period, so you need to aim it well to keep foes bouncing off Wario’s hands.

Up air attack has lots of air lag after use, so you’ll likely drift all the way back to the ground afterward, unable to double-jump for combos and second tries. The hitbox on the clap, being high above Wario, also doesn’t make this suited to jump-in use on standing enemies

Down Air Attack

This attack deals 1.3×6, 4 damage, where Wario spins upside down like a drill, and lands a multi hitting downward combo attack. This packs a lot of hits into a short period of time. Wario can also be steered while he spins. And the final hit is hard than the rest and sends opponents soaring into the air.

If used low to the ground, down air attack has bad landing lag on touchdown, with Wario momentarily planted headfirst in the floor. It’s good aiming below air-to-air, and can pick up juggle combos depending on how tumbling enemies are reacting. It’s even easy to aim and score multi-hit combos when used during short hops. It’s just vulnerable to being shielded or dodged and leaves Wario wide open.

Special Moves

Wario has 4 special moves. All of them are detailed below.

Neutral Special – Chomp

This attack deals 2.6×3+, 5. In this attack, Wario goes for a bite and traps enemy in his jaws, where you can maximize his chewing by mashing on the Attack or Special buttons to maximize the damage dealt by chewing. The max number of bites you can get is eight, dealing 25.8% damage to the opponent, while refilling 4.8% of Wario’s health.

Chomp attack ahs the same speed as any Grab attack of Wario’s, but it stays active for a long time.  Special reversing is important when aiming Chomp. If you get a chance to bite and eat someone behind you, input neutral special, then instantly tap toward Wario’s back, if you do it properly, Wario will flip before Chomping towards them.

Side Special – Wario Bike

Wario can use  his bike in many varying attacks that can deal different amount of damages, as it all depends how you attack your opponent with his bike. In this attack, Wario gets on his chopper and bears down on anyone in front of him. The attack starts slow as Wario is not quick in mounting his bike. If his bike is destroyed or ditched, it takes at least five seconds for you to use this special again.

There are many moves you can perform with Wario’s bike. Below we have listed what they are called, what damage they deal and how you can perform them:

  • Bike State: This move deals base damage
  • Driving: this move deals 0.6 to 11.2 damage. In this you just go for ramming the opponent with the bike. This attack deals the least among of damage
  • Gliding: this move deals 3.9 to 7.5 damage. While mid-air, Wario whips out the chopper and mounts it. Then glides to the ground.  You can also hold back to tilt the front wheel up. Or forward to angle the front wheel down toward the ground
  • Turning skid: This move deals 7 damage. Tapping backwards will send the bike into a skidding turn that creates a hitbox behind the bike a it skids. The fast the bike is going for a skidding turn, the longer the turn skids backward.
  • Rising wheelie: this move deals 8.3 damage
  • Popped wheelie: this move deals 5 damage. While riding forward, tap up to perform a wheelie. When the front tire is fully up, Wario pumps his fist twice in the air, then brings the front tire crashing back down for another launching hit.
  • Wheelie drop: this move deals 13 damage.
  • Driverless bike slowing: this move deals 3.5 damage
  • Lateral bike toss: this move deals 10, 13 damage. This makes the bike a projectile as Wario mounts up and accelerates towards the opponent, and dismounts at full speed
  • Vertical bike toss: this move deals 14, 18 damage. If you ditch the bike a little early, it leaves it on the stage. This is where Wario can toss the bike as a projectile. If you do not go to toss it, the bike disappears in thirty seconds.

Up Special – Corkscrew

This attack deals 5, 1×4, 4 damage. Wario blasts himself upward with a launching hit directly in front at the beginning, then multiple blender hits on the way up. After the attack ends, Wario drifts down, helpless until landing. Tap left or right immediately after inputting up special to make Wario take a diagonal trajectory instead of flying straight up, great when using Corkscrew for offstage recovery back to a safe ledge.

Corkscrew’s travel distance isn’t amazing, and it’s predictable for enemies, so put double jumps and airborne Wario Bike to good use as well to make recovery plays less obvious.

Down Special – Wario Waft

Wario can produces his waft attacks as he is always building up gas in his belly that can be used against enemies. The long you hold it up, the greater the damage it deals out as the pressure keeps building up. Longer charge times also result in fast fart releases.

Below we have listed the charge times and the damage dealt upon release:

  • 0-14 seconds: 0
  • 15: 12
  • 30: 13
  • 45: 14
  • 1 minute: 21
  • 1m 15s: 24
  • 1m 30s: 26
  • 1m 45s: 28
  • 2m: 27 early, 20 late

Between zero and 15 seconds of charge, Wario Waft is fairly slow to release, about like an average side smash, and deals no damage. It temporarily stuns anyone close enough to Wario to get a whiff.

Between 15 and 59 seconds of charge, Wario Waft’s activation is faster, just a hair slower than his neutral attack jab.

Between 60 and 119 seconds of charge, Wario Waft’s activation speed is very fast. Only Wario’s down tilt hits marginally quicker. Power and knockback between one to two minutes of charge are very high, making Wario Waft a potent instant KO move on opponents with high damage (80%+) built up.

With over two minutes of held gas, Wario flashes and begins glowing to indicate a full charge. Fully pressurized Wario Waft becomes a different attack entirely. The release speed slows a bit. The initial tooting hitbox is much bigger around Wario, launching him upward rapidly—fully-charged Wario Waft catapults him upward higher than double-jumping. He doesn’t lag after he stops rising, so you can perform other actions.

Final Smash – Wario-Man

In the final smash, Wario unleashes his ultimate fart. He starts by rushing horizontally, so line up desired targets even with him for cutting loose. If he hits anyone on his initial dash, he transitions into a superhero montage of heroic Warios smacking the victim from every direction, before the lead Wario finishes them off with the mother of all farts.
