AMD Ryzen 3000 Series Vs Intel CPUs, Should You Buy Now Or Wait?

AMD Ryzen 3000 Series

AMD Ryzen 3000 series CPUs that are based on the AMD Zen 2 architecture have been leaked yet again by a retailer in Singapore. According to the leak, the AMD Ryzen 3850X comes with 16 cores and 32 threads and costs just $560. That is an impressive value for money keeping in mind what Intel has to offer at the same price point.

AMD Ryzen 3000 Series Specs And Pricing

The retailer has listed all the upcoming AMD Ryzen 3000 series CPUs, their pricing and specifications as well. Looking at the specifications, there is a chance that the upcoming AMD Ryzen 3000 series CPUs could disrupt the market if this information is indeed accurate. This is a leak and this information has not been confirmed by AMD so you should take this with a grain of salt.

It is worth pointing out that a similar listing was released by a Russian retailer back in January and both of them are pretty similar, so the information could be accurate. You should wait for the official announcement from AMD before taking this to heart.

You can check out the AMD Ryzen 3000 series listing below which include the AMD Ryzen 3, 5, 7 and even 9:

AMD Ryzen 3000 Series

It is worth pointing out that AMD Ryzen 9 is not going to compete with the Intel Core i9 as the AMD Ryzen 7 series already offers similar specifications even if the clock speed is a bit lower. The AMD Ryzen 9 offers 16 cores and 32 threads which is double compared to what Intel Core i9 CPUs have to offer.

At the entry-level, we have the AMD Ryzen 3 3300X that is priced at around $112. This is a great price for a CPU that will come with at least 4 cores and 4 threads. At the mid-range, we have the AMD Ryzen 5 3600X which costs $260. This could come with 6 cores and 12 threads. The top of the line AMD Ryzen 7 model comes with 8 cores and 16 threads at $370. Then we have the AMD Ryzen 9 3850 which comes with 16 cores and 32 threads for $560.

The pricing is regional and could be a bit higher or lower in the USA and other parts of the world. This is something that you need to keep in mind. What we can tell you is that the cost per core and thread is very impressive indeed and these chips are great value for money if the pricing is indeed accurate.

SKU Specs Cost per core (USD) Cost per thread (USD) Total price (USD)
AMD Ryzen 3 3300X 4 cores

4 threads

28 28 112
AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 6 cores

12 threads

60 30 260
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8 crores

16 threads

36.25 23.125 370
AMD Ryzen 9 3850 16 cores

32 threads

35 17.5 560

If we exclude the entry-level model, you can see that even though you are paying more money for the higher end chip, the price per core and the price per thread does come down. There is a small difference between the AMD Ryzen 9 and 7 because of the law of diminishing returns but there is a significant difference between the AMD Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 chips when you compare the price per core and price per thread.

We can make the same comparison for the Intel chips as well. We have taken the prices from Newegg and you can check out the same numbers as follows:

SKU Specifications Cost per core (USD) Cost per thread (USD) Total price (USD)
Intel Core i9-9900K

8 cores

16 threads

66.248 33.124 529.99
Intel Core i7-9700K

Intel Core i5-9600K

Intel Core i3-8100

4 cores

4 threads

34.997 34.997 139.99

You can see that the top of the line Intel CPU costs almost double per core and per thread compared to the top of the line AMD Ryzen 3000 series CPU. This is not a fair comparison because the AMD Ryzen 3000 series chip offers double the cores and threads so let’s compare the 9900K with the Ryzen 7 CPU. The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X is still much cheaper than the Intel 9900K. The same is the case at the entry-level and mid-range segments.

The AMD Ryzen 3000 series is clearly much better value for money and if you are in the market for a new CPU and want the best value for money then you should wait for these chips to come out. If you want the best gaming performance then Intel would be the best bet. If you do some content creation on the side then AMD is a great option as it offers more cores and threads than Intel and the cost per core and thread is also lower.

On another note, AMD is cutting down the cost of AMD Vega 56 and RX cards in order to compete with Nvidia cards. AMD Ryzen 3000 series CPUs have been introduced for laptops and AMD claims that DLSS is not as great as what Nvidia would have you believe.
